Type 3 exhaust tip options
Hi all,
I have recently heard these empi chrome baffled exhaust tips (16-9535) (photo attached) used on an original 1600 beetle motor and they DO seem to make
the exhaust sound just a bit more 'throaty' and slightly deeper. Hearing this sound, I've been looking around for similar options to try out on my
1970 Type 3 fastback, assuming that I can't use an empi tip like these due to the curved setup of my original exhaust tip.
I was just wondering what options there are out there (if any) to get this slightly deeper note just by changing the exhaust tips (not getting a whole
new exhaust set up)?
Any help is much appreciated!

Volkswagen4me You have a type 4 coversion on your car, the empi tips wont fit that or a stock type 3 exhaust, buy a vintage speed!!

Thanks everyone! Looks like vintage speed is the option.
Empi - thanks for letting me know about the type 4 conversion, I'm not very familiar with the engine and exhaust side of things. Does that mean the
original exhaust was replaced with an exhaust from a type 4, or could the whole engine be from a type 4 as well?

Hi , no a type 4 motor would have the pipe on the other side, this exhaust has been flipped allowing use on a type 3 motor.
I have installed a couple of vintage speed systems on type 3s and they are awesome, i have one on my Karmann ghia also.

Thanks empi - that's very helpful
One last question: why would someone install a type 4 exhaust on a type 3? Does it give it better performance? Or is it just an alternative exhaust
that can be used?

Original Type 3 exhaust are no longer available new you would be luck to find a good second hand one if there was such a thing that's why
the Kombi Type 4 was modified to suit the Type 3 engine
and that's why VVDS developed the Type 3 Vintage Speed Exhaust

I'm thinking the vintage speed exhaust may go on my 'things to get' list
Listening to a few from videos on the web, they look and sound good, but they don't seem to have much back pressure... Not sure if that ever causes
any issues for anyone or if it's just the recording?
