Alternative LSD options for a 002 box

Hi All,

Has anyone tried fitting an alternative LSD to a 002 box?
Something common, such as a subaru or commodore etc...
If yes, what was required to make it fit and work.

Cheers

Why not get the TBD that Weddle offer?

I've not heard of other manufacturers diff being fitted to a VW box. You would have to ensure that the diff will clear the input shaft.

Thanks for that Smiley,
I know that you can get these along with quaifes and ZF's(a bit harder to come by these days) but the reason I ask is because of the high cost's of not only the unit, but then the shipping as well.
Subies and commy (I should say borg warner really) LSD's are so common that they are relatively inexpensive, when compared to the above options.

I am interested in doing this as well. Tho in Type 1 box.
From the limited knoweledge I can find TBDs are not real LSDs like the ZFs and are possibly a bad choice for VWs, I dont know why but I have read that because they are torque bias and not limiting slip they just spin in some situatuions of loss of traction.
Id guess to stay away from Subaru possibly a little light weight for VW.
Maybe BMW run a true LSD that would work.

I dunno if you can get a LSD for your diff either Mr Choppa, but I am gobsmacked that yours lasted in your notch as long as it did! :)

Hi

I'm running a Quaife in my G50 box, you wouldn't know its there, I get an occasional slip in corners but I'm not racing for sheep stations, I also ran one in my old 1302.

Drag race style starts they really hookup just as good I think as a ZF, ask Matt Berry what he thinks of his Quaife. A ZF has parts in that will wear out in time, a TBD will not wear out.

A savage LSD can play havoc with a Beetles handling.

A friend of mine reckons he could have fitted a 9 inch diff into a Beetle box but it would have no reverse gear, Kombi box may have more room.

Unless you have access to cheap machine work or can do it yourself it may cost more to fit a non VW diff than buying one off the shelf.

Hi Dino

The guy that mocked it up is out of VWs now, you would need to do the mocking up yourself to see if its doable, but as I said in my earlier post a savage LSD could upset the handling of a Beetle
