Exhaust system for 71 super beetle

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at putting a new exhaust system on my super beetle.

Currently has a hideaway system which is looking rather tired compared to the rest of the car.

Couple of questions, i noticed that the rear apron on my bug does not have cutouts notches for the pea shooters. I thought all super beetles had pea shooters, is my rear apron modified.

Secondly I'd like to get an A1 side-winder system in stainless steel. I'm looking at removing the heat ex-hangers. Can somebody tell me if this is just a direct bolt on.

My bug has a Pobjoy 1640 motor.

Thanks in advance.

Yep, rear apron is modified. Leave it to others to advise on the A1

A1 sidewinder will physically fit.....but the primary pipe diameter will be a tad too large for a 1640cc. You may get away with running a 1 1/2" system, but ideally you would probably want a 1 3/8" sized system. I don't think A1 go down that small.

Maybe look at some exhaust options from Vintage speed....

Or have a look at the new range of exhausts that Rod Penrose has.

I understand that he now has his own range of high quality systems made for him in the USA.

Do you have a single carb?
If so, ideally, you want an exhaust that has heat risers that work properly

I asked Rod Penrose, he says the trimil sidewinder will fit.

I see that Classic vw has a bunch of s/s sidewiders for half the price. I'm guessing its China made.

Yep will fit, but the pipe size of 1 5/8" is too large IMO for your motor.

Thanks Craig. So 1 1/2 in will physically bolt on but given the size of the engine you say 1 3/8 will be better.
