Rear disc brakes 74 L Bug


Hi, I am presently two years into a bare metal resto of my 74L bug. I have considered fitting rear discs, but considering the bug does not have a brake booster, I wonder if rear discs have any value or efficiency over the original drums. Are people only fitting them because of the updated aesthetic ? I would appreciate your advice.

What motor will you be running?

Unless going (well) past the 100 RWHP mark i do not believe it is necessary

if anything T3 drums are a good upgrade

Do you mean Type 3 drums or T3 drums?
Would you need a dual curcuit master cylinder to run them on the rear?
Have considered doing this to my 66 beetle...

Hi Bizzare, this is my first 'reply' thanks for your reply. Intention at the moment is to build a mild 1641, dual carbs, mild cam, standard valves. I see a lot of people are doing 1776. I am looking for a good lift in performance, but need drivability and reliability etc. I am going to use Fuchs style 911 rims 5 stud. I spoke to Mick (motors) about the brakes, He wasn't a fan of the rear disc mod. I am replacing front rotors and calipers, intendiing to purchase standard calipers, but would appreciate advice if there is a better caliper that bolts straight on. Cheers.

If you do decide to go rear discs you wont need a booster.

Have raced with std L bug brakes more than good enough just fit a set of ebc red pads and off you go,type 3 rear drums are the go also while your at it put the typ3 wagon rear torsion bars and duel spring plates in as well cheap and effective mod Cheers Rudi

Too academic for me Bizzare. its all good as long as it isnt interuptus. Of interest, I have the bug body on a rotisserie. I built it for under 400 using two modified small engine stands from super cheap. (on special at the time.) When I work out how to put images up, I will give an explanation for those interested to do. Do you think any body would be interested ?
Is there an explanatory section of how to put images up?
Bug body coming along, final coat of epotec 408 applied today, after all repairs, lead,bog,panel plating, rust out, bog!,spray putty and full guide coat block out. Madness.

Does your Supercheap rotisserie fully revolve?

Mine only goes to about 80 degrees - so wont flip the body with out addtional lift (skyhook and chain blocks).

Gday Newt, yes the rotisserie fully revolves. when I set it up, I supported the body with my collapsable (super cheap on special) engine crane, with modified boom extension. Then I made brackets to fit the bolt pattern of the bumper mounts, then an adjustable vertical bracket to get the body to swing about the centre line ( approx 300mm above the brackets)
