Just buy the proper km type 3 speedo from Europe. As said above.
http://www.ebay.de search "typ 3 tacho" the germans call the speedo a "tacho"

Need one for 1956 beetle and one for 1963 Kombi splitty. They must be fully functional. The one in my beetle goes haywire after 60 and the mileage
trip meter does not work in the Kombi. It is important that the cable outlet on the back is same locations.
