stud diameter in type 1 case

Hi all, just a quick question. I'm doing a quick rebuild on my type 3 notch, 1600 engine. I have bought another 1600 upright engine that was in a kombi with a cracked case as it had an engle cam in it, which I intend to use. Putting the two cases next to each other, the upright has larger diameter barrel/head studs fitted.

Would these have been fitted as an upgrade or is there some diffenence that larger studs are in place? Also is it worth fitting the larger studs to the case I'm going to use? The old engine was leaking oil pretty badly and all gummed up hence giving it a tidy up and replacing the pistons barrels, but it was running without any major issues.

Thanks in advance. Adam

Cheers, Adam

the earlier engines had the larger studs 10mm

The newer engines had the smaller studs 8mm

the smaller studs with case inserts are the better of the 2 cases as the bigger studs tended to pull the threads after years of use
if your using the upright case for the type 3 engine I would check also if it has the dip stick oil

Much appreciated

Thanks for clarifying that,
I will be be using the type 3 case (upright one is the one that is cracked) there are a few slight differences I could see with mounting points either side of the oil pump and oil pressure sender unit etc.

All good.
