Type 3 Notchback 1964 project


Hi All.

I thought id set this up to document my VW project.

I bought this beauty back in 1999. I drove her during my university days and after several years my long suffering mechanic said he could no longer pass it through rego without having sleepless nights.

Being poor at the time I let the old girl sit in my mums carport for a few years whilst I travelled around Europe for a few years.

I finally now have a job and some expendable income, so shes going to get a full make over.

Im kinda new to all this so id love some guidance when needed.

Ive stripped her down and have all the parts in separate containers.

Theres a fair bit of surface rust and a few areas such as the heater channels that have rusted through. I have a mate who is going to help me with some panel work.

Whats everyones opinion on blasting back to bare metal and starting over with primer etc.

I am yet to do my own car but have been thinking about it a lot and discussing it with my local panel shop next door to my business. For them a quality job on bare metal is to start with epoxy primers, then fillers and fair while keep on spraying the epoxy on any new bare metal. Then he switches to a normal paint primer (i think these are harder and a more stable base for the top coat and a better bond for the final top coat.) and then a regular polyurethane two part paint.

When I get to doing my own I will do this except I will only strip to bare metal where needed (probably half the car). Where the original paint is still 100% I will rub back but not necessarily rub through. The lower parts of the body and detail areas are likely to have all the rust anyway so these areas can be media blasted for ease.

G'day and welcome

Rebuilds are always a hard task.

Try and have an end plan.
What is it you are trying to build?
Stock, reliable, custom, somewhere in between?

A "full respray" is where the BIG $$$ are.

I believe you can stop the rust without have a "show car" finish

Pick the wheels you want and build your car around the suspension set up.

If you get it to a solid base, you can always do the "show car" respray later

Hey Bizarre, I've just purchased a type 3 from Peter with the panel van! Just sending to Andrew Dodd to get looked over and blue slipped . I'm in a similar situation in that, engine wise its pretty solid , body wise ,overall seems solid, hopefully being a Goulburn car its relatively dry . There are some minor bits of rust , around front window seal ,hopefully not too big a job to repair but,hey who knows with a car of this age . Paint is ok , the roof is a bit thin and few dings,scratches and road rash you would expect at this age.
I'm not wanting a concourse car but a tidy reliable daily (being I only drive around 10k kms a year . Interior I feel can be fixed quite easily but not sure what would be a good fix for the body especially paint wise . I'm happy to keep car original white colour,not really wanting to do bare metal rest . Are there any techniques or tricks that can be used to tidy up paint and what would you recommend to stop or at least control the dreaded tin worm ? Really appreciate the help and knowledge to be found on the forum .

Hey thanks for the replies. Ive started stripping the panels off and im gonna have a look at what needs repairing and repainting. Something similar to cruiser.

My plan is to strip it down and have a look at the floor pan and like you said work my way up.
I plan on having a customised modernised version of the type 3. Green body and gun metal grey trimmings.
Ive also toyed with the idea of have a Subaru engine installed but that's much much later.
Ill take some photos and show you how im getting on.
I suspect this will be a 2-3 year plan.

My first step is to get the wheels off, blasted and primed I think.

Ive got a pretty big garage and work area so should be a fun spring and summer.

Lets get started


Today started the long task of stripping the paint to barre metal. Using chemical stripper which seems to work pretty well. Although there seems to be a number of colors beneath.

Starting on the boot lid and so far so good. Im slowly getting more efficient at this. The plan is to strip all the panels myself but get the body and the floor sent to be stripped somewhere here in canberra.

So after ive got it to bare metal, hopefully tomorrow. Ill wash with degreaser, then rust converter, then wash again, then etch prime, then sand and wash again, then start with the normal primer.

How many coats of etch (im assuming just the one?) then how many primer coats?
