Engine Number Help.

Hey guys,
I recently brought a 68 VW Beetle & I'm having a little trouble working out which engine it has.. I've searched Google & from what I can tell it's the 1700cc 68HP version but I'm most probably wrong. The engine number is V81xxxP any help would be great.
Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum. Are you in Victoria by any chance as that looks to me like it is a number punched in to a new engine block by the Victorian police when the engine has been changed and the car came up for rego.

Hi,
I'm in NSW, it's a dual port motor if that helps.. I just went for rego & told the mechanic it was a 1700cc.. I Googled VW engine numbers & read that engine's starting with V were 1700cc so I assumed it was..

1700cc is not a typical size in a beetle. More likely it is a 1600cc but the only engine numbers I have seen ending with a P are those that have been issued by the police. I assume the V at the front is for Victoria so maybe the car spent some time down there at one stage. Someone else may have more knowledge on this though but I think the only way you will really know is to take the engine apart and check but I don't think it matters enough to do that.

Thanks for the help guys, will probably just leave it as 1700cc on the paperwork. Too much of a hassle to change again.
Cheers
