Window Regulator - 1967

Hi All,

I purchased a pretty worn out '67 beetle about 18 months ago as a run around for my daughter. It needed some TLC and lots of replacement parts. Over the time it is slowly taking shape as a backyard resto. However, I have this one problem I can't seem to resolve and it relates to the drivers window regulator.

The regulator was in the back seat when we bought the car, so obviously there was a problem with it. Now we found out that it is extremely hard to wind up (you need two hands), however, winding down is ok. After pulling it apart, I cannot identify where the problem is. I cannot find any details on how these regulators are suppose to be put together properly and many references do not refer to this type of regulator.

Does anyone know how these are suppose to be assembled properly?

A couple of pictures shows the regulator dis-assembled. It appears all complete as I was careful when pulling apart. I am missing something really simple here and I'm starting to believe my wife that I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I am located in Birkdale, Qld and happy to travel locally to get this fixed.

Does the glass slide freely whilst the mechanism is out as often the glass will jam in the run channel. Another problem is the position of the lift rail on the glass, if this isn't correct the glass will cock and jam on the way up.

Hi Grumble,
The glass slides ok in the rails. The regulator is hard to wind without being installed. It appears that the internal spring is putting pressure inside the chamber making it hard to wind.

I don't have the one to replace yours but several Bay Kombi ones and 2 from a 68 which could work.. they are left and right units

will also have a mechanic or two here if you can come out around 11 am...its not a bizz they are dubbers visiting me.
