Yes. I haven't done it, but all discussions I've had on the subject suggest that strength-wise the Renault box craps on a 5-speed converted VW box.

Now, what's the name of that guy in Qld who makes all the engine adapters and stuff? He used to advertise in the aussie VW magazines.... Bill Sherman?

Thats the bloke. He also does brake kits (my old man has a set of his discs on his 62, they are really good, once you get the right master cylinder in :)

I think he also does baja kits too, but dont quote me on that one.

I've only ever seen a renault gearbox in a buggy, with (surprise !!) a 2.7l Volvo v6 behind it !!! Would certainly represent an interesting mod to a vw. What model renault are they out of ? Do you still need to flip ring and pinion to reverse rotation ?

what model renault? the 15/16/17 TL and TS used an alloy case transaxle (same box and engine as the Lotus Europa). I have had a number of these renaults over the years and the gearboxes were good, but not incredibly strong. the input shaft is two piece and only slightly larger than the beetle superbug one.

oh you can flip the diff, with some minor dremeling of the case.

the model I was talking about was a 20 te or 18 te as for the renault box with the volvo engine, Its not suprising because that engine was a co production of renault peugeot and volvo!
I spoke to a guy in northern tas and although very strong the 18/20 te box has slightly suspect syncro's in 2nd and 3rd.
I'm told you have to turn the whole box over.
