On the contrary...Herbie Goes Bananas is a dreadful movie. It isn't fit to be compared to the wonderful original.

I wrote a detailed examination of it (and the three others) - read it here.

Herbie movies are like Icecreams

the first one is quite enjoyable and you can swallow a couple more but after a while they just make you sick.

Bananas was the beginning of the end, the 97 movie sucked as a result of poor attention to detail and shitty computer effects, but I have the TV series, 5 more small Herbie movies and its not too bad, Herbie and Jim Douglas run a driving school and Jim Gets married etc.
Cheers Tony

Yeah I have those TV episodes on tape too. They are pretty good in parts; the car they use is accurate and they do reunite Dean Jones with Herbie. Larry Linville (Frank Burns from MASH) also makes a good baddie.

I wasn't going to mention the '97 Love Bug Remake - it's total poop.

Hey Phil,

It sounds like you're more of a Herbie fanatic than I,
But I reckon I would have a hard time convincing anybody who knows me that there is another more obssessed than I.:D

Are you actually a big Herbie fan or purely a stickler for detail?:)

Cheers Tony

Hi Tony,

Maybe a bit of both! I've loved Herbie ever since my folks took me to Chullora Drive In in 1969 to see the Love Bug when it first came out. I've never been keen enough to make a real replica though so you win the fanatic competition!

In 1984 Greater Union in Sydney re-released Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo on the big screen; it was shown at the old Rapallo on Pitt St where the Wesley Mission building is now. I was involved in organising the street parade and show in The Rocks. Disney provided genuine '53' decals, and GU hired a white '68 Beetle from Rent-A-Bug and applied the decals and red and blue electrical tape. I had to re-detail the car as it looked nothing like Herbie! This was in the days before real VW clubs in Sydney and the day was a bit of a flop.

Now what I'd REALLY like is a copy of the German film, DuDu the Wonder Bug, which I remember seeing as a kid in the early '70s but have never seen since. Do you know it? There are a couple of stills from the film in the Etzold VW Chronicles book.

Monte carlo was my intro

I have a similar story,
I was 7 when my dad took me and my brother to see Herbie goes to montecarlo and someone had a Herbie replica right next to us,
I couldnt understand why the adults didn't find it totally amazing that Herbie had come to see his own movie!!!!:bounce
So I had always had a fondness for Herbie and I have a fondness for most star cars, like the Delorean time machine, K.I.T.T. General Lee, the FOX or Cyotee from Hardcastle and Mccormick, even the bikes & vehicles from MEGAFORCE for a while....{how embarassing.}
I didnt have any real special fondness for VWs till recently,
I Decided one day that I wanted a car that turned heads without having to spend a ridiculous amount of money,
Seeing as I work in film I got to thinking about film cars and decided this is my chance to do a Herbie as it was affordable and easy to source a base car.
It wasn't till I started playing with the car and then going to California and meeting other Herbie owners and going to VW shows etc that I started to get into the VWs at all, I bought my splitty because I saw how cool they can be and just how expensive they were overseas, knowing that Australia would follow suit before too long.
I cant bring myself to part with any of my VWs or my RX3, {I think I have a problem.}
My main problem is driveway space for sure, But I know I am not alone.
Cheers Tony.
