How do u get pins out of old..
OK, this is such an easy one but didn't want to stuff up or dmage my door handles
I'm wanting to take the trims off of Bels door to be reupholstered
I have to knock/tap pins out of door handles
Did try gently but worried about slipping and damaging something
What do u use to get them out and is there an angle your meant to go at etc?
My restoration manuals just say remove pins. OK? They didn't want to move, probably some spray first to loosen them |

Easy. Just push/knock them out with a nail or bit of thick wire. Shouldn't need any more than a push with your hands (ie: you shouldn;y need a
big hammer)

they took a bit of a hit in the beetle but should come out ok..... 1/2 hr before try soem machine oil in the hole ..... 1 drop should loosen it
up....

Jen I always get a friend to help as well to hold the trim back out of the way so u dont damage it when hitting the pin out with a proper size pin
punch n hammer.
Much easier this way to have yr friend push the trim back around the handle so you can get at the pin properly.

Thanks Dave, I was worried about the plastic rim on the handles as I was trying it myself. Not worried about the old trim so much

If you use a nail.... thats when you break a nail....
Jen the plastic trims are available new from you know where. Now the trim is a lot more expensive thats why your trying to protect it.

Nails the best option Jen. File down the point if you are worried about "nailing" something.
Just push the ring away with one hand , hold the nail in the other hand and hit the nail with the hammer. Easy!!!
Try not to loose the pins. Putting them back on is easy!!

I tried to send you this info last night but it couldn't be sent for some unknown reason... something was down... server??
anyway I'll try again.
I have always used a pin punch to knock the pins out.
I tried to draw a pin punch for you but it didn't work after it was posted..
its approx 120mm long and one end (50mm) is 1/8th of an inch round and the other end is about 12mm round.
both ends are flat. the small end has to be smaller than the pin You are knocking out... they are available at most good tool shops etc.
its much easier if you have 3 hands Jen.
One to hold the Pin punch , one to hold the hammer and one to push the plastic ring in so you can hit the pin...

The pins in the passenger door came out easily using a nail and just pushing gentle.
Seems like the drivers door trim hasn't been off in the whole of Bel's life maybe, the pins are really fixed in
It is awkward trying to hold the plastic ring and trim back and getting at the pins must admit, especially on the pins that don't want to budge |

All of the panels are out except for the drivers door. Still can't budge the pins. Have soaked them, no movement
Is drilling them out an option? |

from memory Jen, the pins are made from aluminium, so they are soft and easy to drill... check the pin you have out Jen... is it slightly tapered? if
it is , they will push out easier one way.. have You tried pushing it out from both directions?
Normally they don't have to be tight as the plastic ring keeps them from falling out. It would akward to drill them out.

You probably need something stronger than a nail (mild steel) to move the frozen pin.
Do You have a small screwdriver or something hard You can really hit the end of the pin to dislodge it... Once it has been moved (unfrozen) then use
a nail to push it completely out..
I hope this is of some help..

try a punch- its like a screw driver in that it has a plastic handle and all, but the tip is a point rather than a flathead or phillips driver...
Obviously get one thats about the same diameter as the pins you are trying to drive out.... a bit of WD40 probably wouldn't hurt either..

take one of the pins You have taken out so the tool people will know what size You need. its called a Pin Punch and its All steel - no plastic handle
- and it shouldn't be all that expensive....
