Help identify Baja kit
I recently received the following email;
Hi there -
I contacting you about a vw fiberglass product. You are my first
attempt as I have no idea where to look in Australia. Attached is a
picture of a baja bug with an unusual fiberglass kit - one I have never
seen in America, but like the looks of. Can you please direct me to
someone who may help me get information on this kit? Any assistance
would be greatly appreciated. I am also interested in seeing any other
baja kit available in Australia. I see the kit on the purple baja you
sold had a similar kit. Where can I find info on it?
So, can anyone identify the kit?

yes...it's definately a Baja kit 
I have seen that style before, but other than having seen one in Oz I cant help...sorry...

The requestor may be looking in the wrong country, i.e. the Baja klit might have been imported from the UK.

I found this car, with a remarkably similar bonnet, despite not being a baja.

Wes,
I reckon its a custom kit - a combination of both a bugeye and wide eye kit, with a modified bonnet from the bugeye kit.
Could be anything I guess, but the nosecone on it is identical to my brothers bugeye kit.
As for who makes them - no idea, but would be just as curious to learn.

That guy is funny... He sent me the same email, sent it to the manx club as well. Must have a problem with the word first attempt.
They were a custom kit made here in Brissy by the same guys who made the baja whale tales. They no longer exist though and are still very ugly ..:cry

yeah I have seen the 4 headlight, sunken bonnet baja kit for sale before, so I knew it wasn't a one off. I have seen it on a Baja that was for
sale at Noosa quite a few years back. I would have photos of it somewhere.

The whale tail is called a Sandpiper and you can find adds for it in the old Aust VW mags. It sits on the rear like a normal baja kit cover.
The one you have flying, looks like a cut down street car whale tail.
Hey mark, I think the guy wants to buy one so will pass on your details if you like.

I bought 2 Baja kits from Volkspares (Abotsford Rd Maine, Brisbane. No longer there) in 1980. Each cost about $300 at the time. 1 was the type with
lights in the guards and 2 straight raised strips in the bonnet. The other kit was a snub nose kit that you mount the lights underneath the guards (I
still have pics which I might scan and post for everyone to laugh at my first attempt at a custom Baja). They sold a bonnet just like the one in the
picture as an options (I could not afford it as I was a first year apprentice). Not sure about the guards in the picture though. Look likes that kit
is a mixture.:jesus |

You guys have helped me big time. I appreciate all of you taking time to help. It has been an education to be sure. The attached image is of my baja
(sometimes called a bobber in america) and some of my friends and thier rides. I do not have a buggy, but they always invite me along anyway.
If any of you would like to send me pictures of any Australian Bajas or kits I would appreciate it.
By the way I showed my friends some images of Australian buggies - They want to take a trip and see some in person.
