Year/Model differences
Is there a post that has all the differences between different year models over the whole beetle history? Same for Type 3s, buses, KGs etc... (Would
someone do one for me? It'll only take 2 years to write the post)

Beetle changes over the years...
I have printed out all the changes to Beetles over the years... for Beetles made in the German factory... not Australian Beetles... as German Beetles
had the Large glass in 1965- .12 volts - flat hubcaps - ball joint front end etc
The 1967 Beetle from Germany was a one year only Car. round push button door handles and a mixture of early and late model beetles... a sort of in
between model.... We had the Australian made 1964 beetle until 1968, when CKD kits arrived from Germany .... I'll look up the address and let
You know where to find the list of changes. ....
I don't think I have ever seen a listing of type 2 changes...

i didnt think there were much differences between 60's beetles till i found out my 66 beetle is a 64 body on a 66 chassis, i winder when this
happened?
But the confusing part is that my rear hood and my front hood are from a 66 so im ultra confused, but my windows are 64 windows ???

Almost every VW book in the bookshops will have a few pages of the changes that happened from year to year.
The very best of them is a 3-volume book called The VW Chronicles, by Etzold. Do a search on it at Amazon or Ebay and you might find a copy. It was
originally published in German, called Kafer Dokumentation, but an English version was later edited by Robin Wager (from the UK VW Motoring magazine).
It lists EVERY SINGLE CHANGE to chassis, engine, electrics and body, with chassis numbers and date that the change happened. It's a VW
encycopedia - buy a copy if you can find one.
But it's only for German-made cars (which includes US cars, as theirs were made in Germany). Australian cars are different, as they were
assembled and, later, manufactured in Melbourne.
US and Euro guides are generally OK for Australia up to about 1960, when the cars were pretty similar. Add six months to the date of change - for
example, the oval window came in September 1957 in Europe but not until February or March 1958 in Australia. It took that long for the changes to the
CKD kit parts, and the local body stampings, to take effect.
After 1961 Australian VWs were more and more different from Euro and US Beetles. Aussie Beetles up to early 1968 are basically 1961 models with
upgraded trim, different lights and a 1300 motor (from 1966). The many, many changes that Euro and US Beetles had during the mid-late 1960s did not
happen here.
From 1968 on, Aussie Beetles were assembled from German CKD kits again so we suddenly caught up on all the changes. Again you CAN use the Euro guides
in general after 1968, but again allow a 6-month delay before changes happened here. The '70s US Beetles are a bit different - they got a lot of
trim and tech changes (like smog gear, catalytic converters and fuel injection) that weren't seen in Australia. The Aussie '76, the last
model sold, is quite unique in fact.
Kombis and Type 3s were also assembled in Australia, with a few panels and other parts made here, but they didn't have as high a local content as
Beetles. You can use foreign change guides, allowing the usual 6-month delay for changes to take effect down under.
Karmann Ghias were fully imported, so Euro guides are quite correct. Beetle cabrios and Type 4s were never sold here and only a handful were imported
for evaluation.
The Golf and Passat are another local story.
I wrote as much on this subject as I could in my 1994 book Knowing Australian Volkswagens, which is out of print. You may find a copy on Ebay;
Bankstown Library and Club Veedub's Library both have copies for borrowing. I'm currently working on a new, greatly expanded edition for
sale next year.
