1800 kombi camper twin carbies
Hi
I own a 73 kombi camper 1800cc engine, standard twin carbies.
The engine is in good condition, carbies reconditioned about 6 years/ 20,000 km ago.
They were reconditioned by a carby expert in Dandenong; I'm not sure how familiar he was with VWs as I have never been completely happy with them
since the reco.
I can make it idle for a short time then it just slowly fades away.
It prob only needs the idle settings adjusted but can anybody please tell me how to tune the carbies from scratch.
TIA Ray:cry

slowly fade away idling can mean it is far too rich remove a spark plug in each side after it has been idling for a long time & have a look at the
colour, you really need a workshop manual to follow the tuning procedure properly & try & diagnose
Please, I need drivers side window regulator (winder mechanism) for my '54

Hi Kombikim - this sounds like a reasonable explanation but it wont idle for a long time.
I have a workshop manual written by Haynes (after market) and i find it a bit hard to understand. The writer says it is far easier to take my vehicle
to a VW mechanic than try to do it myself.
I thought maybe somebody on this forum could point me to a downloadable manual that is more user friendly. Ray

let it idle for as long as it will, then remove a plug from each side, If nobody else helps solve quicker I will have a look at Haynes manual, which
is very good & will be able to tell you specific things to look at, do you understand the idling cutt off solenoids ( with wires going to them) it
is important to see if there is a problem with one carbie only

Sorry tried to post yesterday but the gremlins got to us first lol
I took your advice on carbie adjustment and it still wouldn't idle, so I changed the oil and filter on Sat. and left it on the ramps to adjust
the tappets cold on Sunday.
The exhaust valves were all tight (I was told when the engine was rebuilt to keep the tappets adjusted) I hadnt adjusted the tappets for 40,000 kms.
After adjusting the tappets, the motor idled fine.
So with the combination of the tapets adjusted and your advice on idle mixture settings I am now ready for the annual trip to Bathurst in 2
weeks' time.
Thanks for the help Ray65432

great to hear it, 40,000? the exhaust valve adjustment is critical on the VW engines, every 5000k at least, if I were you I would check them again at
Bathurst just to make sure they are OK

Keep an eye out for any valves that always seeme to need more adjustment. If one of them seems particulary bad it is worth checking often.

ok i consider myself told off for being slack on the tappet adjustment But//////////////when i first had the reco job done & was told to keep
them adjusted i did first time needed it /////second time just a bit 3rd time not much 4th 5th 6th & so on no problem & so being used to
engines that only need 1 or 2 times after rebuild then only at major service i stupidly thought they will be ok & as i said i got slack all the
inlets were ok & all the ex were about the same so i think all i need to do is just do them every time i do an oil change it is only about 2000 km
round trip to Bathurst so i think i will do them when i return & again at the oil change . the motor is runing sweet so i am confident i have
not burnt a valve lets hope so must do a compression test after the trip thx again Ray
