OK 912 porsche nuts

Dave,
I think the 912 came with the same engine as the Porsche 356C which looks very much like a Beetle engine. This one however looks like it has a beetle
engine as the generator stand is flat. Porsche engines have a 3 piece case and the generator stand is on a slant.
Here is a real 912 engine:-

Yep its a beetle engine!

VW Engined 912 Porsche..
It looks like a VW Engine to Me....
Maybe an 1835 etc....
a 1600 just wouldn't do justice to a 912.
I saw a LHD 912 with NSW plates on thursday in Sydney.

I thought that 912 Porshe had a modified T4 engine in them, same as a 914. My brother in law had one years ago and it definitly had an up right T4
with Porshe style fan.

its a vw motor look at the things for the heaters on the sides of the fan shroud its a nice car too

The 912 was the pov' version of the 911. Using the 911 body, suspension but 356c 1600sc brakes, engine, etc... Most of these had 4 speed
transmissions (again derived from the 356C) but were replaced by the 901 5 speed. Due to cost of converting the 4 speed to IRS.
For the first couple of years of 911 production the 356C was still being produced. The 912 was to soften the blow and get rid of excess 356C parts
after the 356 discontinued.
So no, the motor is not a VW item. However many, many 912's have had 914 motors put in them with upright conversion kits (upright kits were being
manufactured for the type4 right from 1968 by tuners in Germany). So it's not uncommon for these car to be running around. Some even with beetle
motors.
But since we never officially imported Porsches into Australia until just recently, very few were actually shipped out here, since owners who could
afford for Hamiltons (or the like) to bring them into the country would hardly go for the old kit under the new skin.

Look at the angle the generator stand sits. The fuel pump, the forward facing bolt (showing the front piece of the 3 piece case), shape of the tinware
over the cylinder heads, etc...
It is very similar and started as a VW motor. But after 20 years of foster parenting by the worlds best engineers, it's a different child
altogether.

Engine
I drove past the Oldtimer garage today on my way to look at a house. I popped in and saw this car up close. The engine is a real Porsche Engine (3
piece). In fact there was a guy there who was very interested in buying it. I like 912's but these days you can get an early 911S for the same
cash (well as this one anyway).

The jury is still out
Here is a picture of the case of this particular car showing the engine number! I'm not 100% convinced this is a 912 engine now. Look at the case
