Powder Coating Vs POR15
Gday All
Any one got experience on this topic. It may have been discussed before but I have not looked.
Any way i am getting to the stage where i am ready to coat a VW beetle chassis i am building for my Baja.
Want to know what other peoples thoughts are on POR15 or Powder Coating. ie in regards to rust prevention and any other problems there could be.

I have painted the underneath of my kombi in POR15 , I had it shot blasted and then sprayed on the POR.
It looks good and will not chip off,
I have heard that powder coating is not as strong and if it chips the water can get underneath.

I have looked at the spec of the por15 and it looks like the way to go.
Powder Coating does not seem to be the done thing, so i am thinking POR15.
Yeah i to am planning on getting the whole chassis sandblasted then spraying the POR15 on.

57Kombi is on the money, road debris can chip away at the powdercoat and expose the floorpan to the elements, and then hello rust.

I've read on here that when someone sprayed their pan with por15 it when on alittle thin and they did get some chipping.
For the purpose you are using it for you should condisder brushing - from memroy thry repainted with a brush and were much happier

POR 15
I have had my buggy pan blasted and was wondering what to do about the paint.
Could anybody tell me where to get
this POR 15 in Sydney and what i would expect to pay for it?
If anyone has applied it using a brush i would be keen to hear how its holding up.

POR 15 with a brush
I v'e painted the chassis of my '56 with POR15 .. Did it with a brush after I sanded, wirebrushed the lot .. Admitedly the car is in pieces
staill but the chassis is Mickey Mouse looks great .. A brush was so easy ... It self levels .. I expected to buy 4 litres to do the chassis but the
guy said less than 1 litre was good enough .. He was right .. Cant rember the name but they are up at Brookvale.. Sydney

i used to work for a joint doing powder coating for a while, and it is good stuff, but anything that was to be exposed to weather was usually
galvanised first,
the other thing is the steel has to be EXTREMELY clean -like dipped in caustic to remove grease etc and then acid to etch it before painting, so if
there is any old body deadner in seams etc, it will likely melt during the cooking (~200C usually)and run out and ruin the paint job.
so looks like por15 may be the go for your chassis,
but powder coating is great on things like brackets, steel rims, sway bars etc

POR 15
Its a paint that comes from the states. It (according to the blurb) dries on top, then draws the moisture up from the metal giving a really tough
surfacce coat. I did my pan (after sand blasting it) with a brush. From memory look on page three or four of this section, (its marked as
'blasting and painting my pan' there are some pics there. The pan
hasn't progressed, but I can say that I used a cheapo brush and threw it out. When I came home (three months after painting) and looked at the
pan I actually hit it with a hammer and the paint didn't chip, so I sort of believe the advert for the paint now.
The (1 litre) can cost me about $66 aust, and I have about a third or more of it left in my garage that I can use on other bits. I used the chassis
paint and it isn't UV stabilised, but they have other paints that are, so investigate and go from there. I got mine in a paint shop in
Penrith.
