1600 4 joint Kombi box into Splitty


When fitting a 1600 Bay box into a Splitty what half shafts are best to use due to the hubs being 40mm closer together.
Any input would be apreciated,

a split kombi?

What IRS arms are you using, what CV's are you going for?

I think you got two options. Both using bug IRS arms.

1- type 2 CV's on the box only, type 1 CV's on the stubs. Then get a type 1 axle and machine 5mm off the shoulder to accept the type 2 CV on one end.

2 - This is what I have on my car. type 2 CV's on the box and stub. Stub needs to be redrilled for this. Then use type 1 axle with 5mm machined off the shoulder on both ends, to accept the type 2 CV's. This works well and has enough axle float.

its a '66 Kombi, and I want to fit '70 Bay 1600box and hubs etc. The problem is that the early spring plates are 40mm closer together, therefore the drive shafts need to be about 20mm shorter. I reckon Beetle ones would be too short and Bays too long.

You won't be able to use bay trailing arms, as they won't connect to the early spring plates.

Then if you use beetle arms you can't use the bay hub as the stub axles are different sizes.

I use a 6 rib in my car, with beetle IRS. The gearbox is wider, but the beetle axles still work fine. Since 5mm gets machined off the shoulders, it makes the axles effectively shorter.
