Better headlight bulbs
Hi
Has anyone had any experience with better headlight bulbs, I dont want any of those blue one the ricer crowd use.

crap headlights
Any auto elec will supply bulbs that are better than standard, also how are the reflectors? If they are stained or dirty, replace them.

You can get Hella or Narva +50 replacements which have (purportedly, I haven't tried them yet) 50% more candlepower than stock with no more
current consumption, and a white light (not ricer blue).
The H4 replacements are around $28/pair.
Why not buy a pair and report back here? ;-)

Have the HELLA bulbs in my bus.What a difference they make!!! Also replaced the light assemblies and tried the normal bulbs first. You could really
tell the diffference.Worth the time...:bounce:kiss

Hi
I have done a bit of looking around on the net and have found that the PIAA bulbs look good from reports. I have nearly new Porsche 911 headlights in
bug, but before I fit better bulbs Im going to fit some relays. I have bought a VP Commodore relay block, I plan to mount this in the boot somewhere,
Im tired of having realys mounted all over the place. In the boot I have relays for windscreen pump washer, horn, intercooler radiator fan, radiator
cooling fan & after run radiator cooling fan, then when I add headight relays its going to look a little messy, in the back of the car I have 2
heater fan relays, ignition relay, fuel pump relay & intercooler water pump relay.

When I got my car it had one standard 55/50 and one H4 - believe me, the difference is night and day (don't drive at night with the stockers.)
You can get brighter ones, but they cost more, may cause heating problems with the stock lights and really p%$$ other drivers off!

can you just use some crome paint on your reflectors if they're crusty and is it possible to just buy the headlight glass that goes on the
front?

Sorry, but no (especially if you use the brighter ones, it will actually burn,) and no. I seem to recall V-Dub Repairs and Spares in Freo has new
ones if you can't get them from a wrecker.

I have spoken to an auto electrcian freind of mine and next time I see him he sell me some bulbs that he recommends. Im going to put some in the other
car as well, I will get back to you with my findings.

Steve, I upgraded the headlights in my Kombi and it made a huge difference.
I got new light glasses and reflectors H4 type from Import Advantage here in Brissy. They were quite cheap. Have H4 stamped in the glass but still
require the VW type bulb base, 55/60w halogen. Not a 'universal' H4 bulb.
I wired in a new pair of heavy duty feed lines direct from the battery. Two relays, one for high one for low. Separate fuses. Relays switched by
original wiring. New earth fittings. Standard wiring grades will not give you the benefit. This as much as the bulb is letting the side down.
Result is bright white light that blows the standard bulbs away.
I dont know about where you are 1302steve, here the po-lice have been tugging cars/bikes with 'non adr' read non standard lighting. The
anti hooning legislation snuck some nasty new penalties. Blue bulbs are not adr, not that you want them. High watt bulbs however are non adr too.
At least hey are booking ricers here too for using those little bue PIA spotties on the freeways too (yaaaaay)
I am really happy with how the upgrade went. Looks stock and works significantly better.

I've got the H4's in my kombi. They came out of my International truck, and before that they were in my HQ, so I really can't remember
how much they cost me. There are Quartz-Halogen bulbs available for these in up to 130W high beams, but last I heard, anything over 100W was illegal
in Vic.
As others have found, these H4's absolutely blow away the old incandescant globes that the kombi came with. :thumb
