Questions about air-conditioning in a bay Kombi?

Does anyone here run air-conditioning in a bay kombi?
What does it cool like?
Is it after market?
And what’s a decent price to pay for it?
If you’re in Sydney where did you get it from?
Lots of questions but I want to install one.
If you have the full kit for sale let me know
Thanks

i believe it uses about 10% engine power, but dont know much else. talk to Colin (kruizinkombi), he has an original set, not sure if it is fitted or not yet.

A mate has a late 70s bay window microbus delux with all the fruity accessories such as 1/4 flippers in the front doors, chrome around the window rubbers and chrome 1/4 windows etc, and factory A/C. It has ducting up into the headlining and a specially plastic moulded headliner in the front with vents and controls. It is very cool (he he) and looks impressive, but he says he cant use it really because of the power it sucks.

P.S. try not to confuse me (Kombicol-casual dubber) with Kruzinkombi (super- moderator) as we both share a first name and mode of transport

Yeah I've got the airconditioner setup but I haven't installed it yet. It isn't original VW though, it's a period aftermarket jobbie.

Unfortunately the roof section of the airconditioner clashes with my sunroof, so I'm still trying to work out what to do there. Still debating about changing my whole roof section to delete the sunroof.

I have been told that the air-compressor that came with my kit is very inefficient and will suck a lot of engine power. There is no reason why the rest of the kit can't be used with a late-model compressor though. If you have a Commodore V6 motor in your kombi, just use the stock Commodore compressor. :thumb

In any case, the airconditioner is just a novelty item for me, not a necessity. I have a Britax ragtop sunroof and front 1/4 windows installed already, and between them I find I get more than enough ventilation to keep the temperature down on hot days.

Kol,

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I AM willing to kill someone for this kit.

I think I am the 'mate' that kombiCol was mentioning earlier.. I have the factory aircon in my 1977 kombi deluxe. The whole unit looks fantastic and is very stylish but I have never had it working because the guy I bought it from said it was too hard on the motor to use..
I already run on the hot side when its a hot summer day so I am not going to hook it up unless I can work something out that is less taxing on the engine..
The compressor needs to be looked at too..

I have an aftermarket unit in my twin cab...DPD brand(USA). Have fitted a rotary compressor and made a drive assembly to run the compressor. I have a 2 litre with webbers and don't notice the power drain that much. Still cruize at 120km on the highway easily and motor does not get hot(105 degrees) on a 4 hour trip. Will be fitting a step up solenoid to help out around town as the idle drops too low when the unit cuts in. The old style piston compressor used to kill the engine!!!! All works well now.....cool.:bounce:bounce:cool:

Are you running an external oil cooler on that sucker too or just as it is?

No external cooler fitted.VDO temp guage has been calibrated correctly and sits in the oil filler hole(tapped into case):bounce Could be a temperature variation of 10 degrees due to windage etc. but is still ok.
