Battery Fires Problems?
I'm thinking about getting an old beetle as an everyday car, but have heard some suggestion about an inherant fire danger with the rear seat
contacting the battery.
Is this a problem or have I been misled?

Welcome to the forum planetjag.
Since you're aware of the (potential) probllem, it's no longer a problem. Just ensure that the battery is adequately covered so that seat
springs cannot short it.

All air cooled Beetles and type 3's had the battery under the rear seat without any problems, except for people who do not cover the battery with
some heavy rubber matting.... an old truck mud flap does a good job. or You can buy a battery box to put the battery in... Normally You won't
have any problems until someone pushes their feet or knees into the seat... early VWs had a metal cover for the 6 volt battery and the later 12 volt
batteries had recessed posts... which are still available.... the battery still must be tied down... otherwise they can & will slide about... a
potential fire danger...

This can be a problem, if the wrong type of Battery has been fitted.
Make sure that the battery you have has sunken terminals and has a proper clamp fitted.
If you have someone with a bit of extra weight on them make sure they sit in the back on the passengers side of the car so the seat frame wont
touch.
Useing the correct battery will mininise the fire risks.

The battery that came wih my car has sunken terminals and also has a acover that snaps sown over the +ve side, for double insurance. |
