If a mechanic trys to rob you, why cant we warn others?

I took my bus in to have a head looked at, it had a small crack between the valves, i needed an option, i had already taken the engine out, and then wanted them to mearly put the engine put back in for me (i thought id treat myself) , and the "silly people" (edited) tryed to charge me $650...un beleivable,
all they did was change a few seals that i provided, and tighten up the bolts and drop the engine back in, oh,and put my new exhaust on it while they were at it......they tryed claiming that it took them a 2 days to do this........"silly people" (edited).

Oh and they made me ride my bike down to the servo to fill up my jerry can so i could drive out of there.....i am very angry with that "edited" mechanic (?) shop in a "edited" in melbourne......

there excuses were:

1) oooohhhhhh, but we had to put some tin ware back on it. (5 screws)
2) but but but i took the fan shroud off it too (2 screws), and then drilled 2 (edited) big holes in my new shoud to mount the reg, (why mount it there "silly people" (edited)) which now apparenty doesnt work, it did when i took it in there,,but alas i had to drive home with 12.2 vs, and i had to explain how to test it.... god are they aloud to hose like that?

Alas in the end, i yelled and haggled the price down to 380.big woop....

My origional idea in taking it to these "silly people" (edited) was "spread the wealth" but now i am 100% convinced, if you find an HONEST mechanic, stick to him/her...

GGGGrrrrrrrrrrrrr

ps, it took them one week in total, my time, to complete this humble task.

Judge for your self, freedom of speach (was) exhibited until i was forced to change my terminology to protect these "SILLY PEOPLE" edited.

I hope everyone or anyone knows who i am talking bout, this forum is to inform us VW lovers, why cant we inform them of crooks??? (edited)

tis a bastard isnt it. you go somewhere, expect to get looked after. get ripped and cant give others the scoop to prevent it from happening again. so they have free rein to do it over and over where ever they think they can get away with it.

i know too as it has happened to me.
but i think somewhere it says... you cant bad mouth but if asked you can recount your experiences.

so keep that in mind when your at the next show or meeting and someone askes 'so how did it go at such and such' or 'did ya get ya motor sorted'.

but hey if you were in sydney i could say with out a problem visit the sticker on me bus. they are the best in my opinion.

Just give us a suburb, most of us VW people in Melbourne could narrow it down to one or two (max) VW places from there.

Not in Vic but if people are really concerned and want to know then they can always email you. Make that offer in your post. There is nothing anyone can do about that. Just my two cents worth. Bit of a joke for what they did though. I am sure people get ripped off all the time for stuff like this.

There was a similar situation a few months ago involving the dissing of a VW business

Legal action was threatened and I'm not sure if it's still proceeding or not?

Have a grumble here but just don't start mentioning names. It's the people at the top end of Admin here, the ones financing this forum that cope the legal flack or threats of.

I'm sure you're telling all your friends about what happened.

Word of mouth is the biggest source of business promotion there is, in this case it's canning and people may stay away depending on other feedback they've had about the same business. If they only hear bad then they will stay away, if most is good they will give the benefit of doubt.

It's not good for any business to get negative comments being made about them, and of they're smart they will try to avoid it happening.

Mind you I work in retail and some people you can never make happy:jesus

Lee that's what he's done now

The other post had hints about the name of the business

I'd deleted one post which replied naming the business, which was an innocent mistake by one of our young members who thought he was helping by giving the name of another business for future use.

I u2ued and suggested he u2u with information and left the original post for someone higher to decide (cop-out on my part)

Grumble but don't name or even get close to naming as it can get the forum into deep shit

Tell your friends in private and let them decide.

It's so easy to sit at home here with not much to do but can someone and not think of the consequences, this is for all parties who can not just the original canner:jesus

Lee I'm working on Monday, no holiday here

So what's the occasion up there in Scone or NSW?

OK do it

It was a lot of money to spend

Just don't name the business on here

If people are concerned then they can u2u him for details just don't publish names or even really good hints on here

Rant as much as you want about the crap service you got, whatever

It is expensive to keep these old VW's of ours on the road and to feel like you didn't get your dollars worth, or any where near it, would be maddening:jesus

Sometimes they have so much money themselves that they can't understand others not having it. Some of us love VW'S and just don't have the $$$$ to spend, we just want to keep our rides going and improve on them when we can

We are a wide mix of everything here, some of us can, some can't, some do and some don't - we're as unique as our rides;)

For a bit of a reality check about prices, here's my last few bills:

15,000 km service - $155 (Repco)
30,000 km service - $320.
45,000 km service - $275.

Each of thses are essentially hook up the diagnostic computer, read and reset faults, fluid changes, filter change, and some visual checks.

I find the figures mentioned here to work on older cars extremely cheap by comparison. Plus, as the older cars have few electronic helpers on board, it takes a certain level of skill to be a good VW mechanic versus an ordinary one. Otherwise, we'd all take our cars to the local Kmart Tyre and Auto shop. Those sort of skills take a certain amount of time to develop, and I feel the air cooled mechanics give excellent skilled service for the money they charge.

On the matter of why we don't name businesses is simple: Australian defamation laws. Nothing to do with consumer protection at all. I think that sucks, but until the law changes, our policy on deleting potentially or actual defamatory posts will remain.

If you don't like it, here is the correct place to take it up with:

http://www.ag.gov.au/

And ... you'll need to look up the AG's department in your state or terroritory as *each* state or territory has different legislation, which makes it a minefield. What is permissible to say in NSW is not legal in Queensland, or vice versa. Crazy.

Good luck - many a politician has a swimming pool from defamation proceedings. For them, it's like winning a small lottery prize, funded by the taxpayer.

The Great Hosing of 2003....

I feel your pain Kombi_Mad, that's ugly. Quite cheeky on behalf of the mechanic, but then again most (but not all) of them are low-down trailer park trash who deserve a good ol' fashioned knee-capping with a blunt instrument.
I'll repeat not all mechanics. Some of my closest friends are mechanics, but come to think of it they all walk with a kind of hobble.

BUT...for the record...I originally recommended these guys to Kombi Mad and unfortunately he got hosed like 50,000 sheep stuck out at sea.
In their defence when it comes to parts (obviously a different story) I've always found them to be second to none. Not only did they have all the parts I was after but they were cheapest by far....their prices being almost a third of the prices of a well-known inner-city VW specialist.

Im a fan of Black_Math' s suggestion and I say bust out Mr.Sawn Off. The Uterus has connections with various terrorist cells operationg throughout Melbourne as you well know Kombi_Mad. For the price of a 650 engine instalment an adequate amount of plastic explosives may be purchased.

I don't encourage violence or terrorist-like activities, I just fund it. Together with my uncles that is. If your'e out there today at the swap meet with all the Bacchus Martian's we can talk. (I'll be the one with the beard selling stuff out of my boot)

I hope this post has been both constructive and of greater benefit to the Volkswagen community. My services are both fair and reasonbly priced.
Thankyou for your time.

WOW!!!
Sometimes this is better than watching Pay TV.....
All understood Jenz....
The Laws are for the crooks....
As You said Jen, some of Us can afford to pay out a lot of money for services..
Some like Me can't...
A service at My local Mitsubishi dealer on My Lancer is under $80-00...
To change the timing belt etc costs about $300 with the belt which is expensive...
With My VW, everything I can do Myself I do... if I can't -- I pay for someone else to do it.. I find prices Much more realistic in the Country... and naturally the people are friendly.. like Me... Lee

He's going to get a shock soon when I go in there to spend a bit extra

I think it ia always good to have a mechanic that is prepared to talk to you a bit about what your car need now or later.
My service mechanic does just that. I have done some panel work for him in the past and so in return he does my general servicing.

When he sees something larger or more VW specialist specific, he lets me know and I get it done by them.

I always ask if they think anything extra should be done when getting that item worked on. eg. LH upper ball joint - they may say "Well we will do you LH lower at the same time for convenience and piece of mind for you! for $ extra"

Communication is the key and getting quotes on part prices etc. I will usually ask "Ummm ballpark figure what have these sorts of jobs been billed out at before?"
They will then be able to honestly (hopefully) reply with from $lowest to $highest.
I will also ask about parts and the diffence in quality and price.

I would rather pay say $45 for a German ball joint that will probably last as long as the original, than $15 for a Brazillian one that may need replacing in 5 years.

But there may be an indicator lens that is $80 for original or $11 for Brazillian. Hey if I replace it in 5 years it is only a couple of screws.

It is all relative and again I cannot stress utilising lots of communication. Yes use people that you are referred to with good reports.

With any work you will find that out of the three properties
QUICK, GOOD, CHEAP
you will have to choose the two that you are going to end up with. :D

Good One Hellbus,
Thats what I would like... someone to say here is a ball joint for $29 from Germany and here is a Brazillian one for $27-50 !!
All the VW Shops I use just give You ONE price for each item.... At least My Ball joints were made in Switzerland so that can't be bad... and good one on the indicator lenses... they are going to craze in the sun anyway..... whether made in Mexici-Brazil or germany..
I trust the VW shop I buy most of My parts from... Lee

Good service

At no notice a mechanic in newcastle did a full engine service, removed the engine, replaced the head with 40psi compression, refitted the engine, replaced the carby wires and welded the clutch cable tube back on to the frame and all that still only cost $650 including the reco 1800 head. all in two days.:bounce

I wonder whatever happened to those VW charge Leaflets that set out how much time was needed to do a job...
like:
Remove engine in Beetle : 15mins.
Replace engine in beetle: 15mins.
R & R clutch assy 50 mins.

Smile at VW owner : Priceless....
for everything else: there's Mastercard...
