Its a early model blinker light fitted to pre 60 Beetels and Kombis.

When you turn the power on the arm pops out of thge door pillar and the light comes on.

Trafficators not semaphores...

Azz,
The correct name for a Semaphore (Yanks call them this and they didn't even have them on their cars) is Trafficators.
Trafficators are little arms that swing out when You move the blinker arm up or down. They do NOT blink... Many cars had them in the 50s... They are located just in front of the rear side window on a Beetle.
When blinkers arrived in late 1960, You could buy a hella accessory amber lamp that took the place of the flush mounted trafficator and did flash... Trafficators are highly sought after for some reason - I have some, My son has heaps of them, but We just keep them.... they were only made in 6 volts... never 12v....
I hope this helps.. Lee
