Hones man.
Thinking of buying a cylinder hone,need opinions,fine,medium,coarse grit stones from 100grit 220grit or 400grit,hurry im buying in 2 days unless

a handy tool for a quick clean up and re-ring. Obviously anything past this should be left to a machinist but I love mine, I've also got a
little one for slave cylinders  |

well the long and the short of it is that you really need two sets of stones (other may disagree). First when you are rough honing you are trying to
smooth out the bore surface so you want a semi corse stone say a 200 grit for a street car (lower for a race car). The cut lines should be sharp and
in both directions at say 40~60 degrees. To finish off the bore you should shoot for a 400 grit, oil down the bore with some heavy engine oil and run
the hone for at least 1 minute per pot. The oil will form a sludge but thats what you want. The bore will be sweet after this and will seal up with
no problesm. Just make sure you clean and clean again when you are done. I run a white cotton rag through the bore to verify its all clean. So
there you have it, good luck there's nothing as satisfying as
firing up an engine that you built with yoru own hands |
