Yes you can fit opening 1/4'ers where the fixed glass is currently.
Rubbers probably cheaper as they are more common in the US, the biggest market for the rubber.

As for price, if enough people are interested I will bring some more in (not many were last time).
Landed cost is ~$150-$200 for a good pair. Allow maybe $100 at a guess for all the rubbers (three pieces per window).
If your paitient and keep your eyes open you should be able to get them cheaper out of a local bus. Finding them rust free is the drama.

i am talking to a guy who has a set for $25 US the pair, and as all my window rubbers need replacing i thought it may be a good opportunity. i need front window rubbers, door rubbers and windscreen rubber. what are all these worth if i get them in Aus?

also, from this pic, is anything other then rubber needed for fitment?

Um,
Their far form complete dude. Will post a pic tomorrow. You need the frame (frame is different for opening windows to fixed) to go with it.
Don't forget exchange rate plus ~$US30 postage (USPS) at a guess.
Mick motors sells new lock mechanisms for ~$16ea, or find a good set off an old beetle somewhere (one in the pic is broken)

Ryan, as has already been said, they can be fitted to replace fixed 1/4 windows, thats how mine got there.

I thought the rubbers were US$25 per side, so if you can get a pair for the price of one, go for it! :thumb

There is a lot missing from the pair in the pic. There is a fixed channel between the 1/4 glass and the wind-up glass, as well as top and bottom hinges, rubbers, and the lock mechanism. I don't think the lock is the same as a Beetle though - I know it's not the same as the type 3 version I'm using on one side. They fit and do the job, but they're not the same. Birchall would notice! :D

Oh, Col,
I have probably 3-4 different style locks all sourced from '74 and later Bay Kombi's.
The aftermarket Brazil/Mex. ones Mick has look the closest to the original latches on my '77. The originals from the rear 1/4'ers are all different!!
Not sure how good they are though.

Andy's prices are about what I've heard in the past from various sources, but I settled on the pair in the picture because they were cheap ($120/pair) and solid.

I bought them initially only with function in mind, and for that they are cheap. To make them 'pretty', they need rechroming, glass polishing to remove scratches, all new rubbers, and a new lock mechanism (one was missing the whole arm, the other was missing a knob). This is eventually going to cost me well above the $300 that Andy quoted for a really good pair, so consider what you want them for before buying cheap.

There are bargains out there, but it might work out better to hand over the cash in the first place. :)

Andy, this is the lock I borrowed from my '72 type 3. It certainly doesn't look out of place, but as you can see in this pic the lock arm can actually swing up without hindrance, even with the lock knob on the anti-clockwise position. It's not at all noticable, but it makes the vehicle a bit easier to break into, so I think I'll contact Mick and lash out with $16. :thumb

Col,
Mine are like that also. When I broke one of mine, I took one from a rear 1/4 and it too could be lifted like you say. I don't know if the new ones will solve the problem.
I'm guessing they are beetle ones anyway.
Haven't been able to source the rivets either.

vent windows

I brought mine from the states and reconditioned them

the costs were;

Buying and shipping $115

Buying brand new seals $60 gen vw

paint $5

total $180 restored

Advise when you find a pair make sure the chrome on the window channel is in good nik then drill the two rivits out on the frame thats holding the hinge (this way you retain the original vw pivoit rivit) you have to do this to put the new seals on then sand blast and paint the frames and reasemble install and enjoy. Dont just install them make sure that you repaint the frames as you'll be in the same boat as before once they have rotted away.

nIck

recycle, restore, enjoy

A word of warning on 'genunine' VW, it often means Brazilian these days, so WCM may still be better!
Old stock from Germany may still be out there if your lucky!

That there is a sweet pair of windows Andy has. I have had a few sets over the years from local stuff and none of them have looked that clean around the hinges. It is worth paying for good ones as the $$$ add up real quick fixing them up. I would love a set or even a drivers only but have the $$$ pointed elsewhere at the mo. Toys.... too many toys:D

Oh, on that point, some help for anyone out there trying to repair rusty frames, you can cut sections out of good beetle ones to replace rusty sections in the bus ones. The profiles are the same!!!
