What's should Oil Pressure be 1.8/2.0 Kombi
Hey all,
Wanting to install Oil pressure gauge and need to know what in KPA should my engine be putting out. I have an 1800 and a 2000, both Dual Carby (if
that makes any difference)
I am worried that once I install in the front of my Bus that the signal drop in the wire will affect readout.

Regardless of brand or type of gauge (mechanical or electric) you should not see an incorrect reading due to the length of hose/cable required to get
to the front of the Kombi. This is asuming (if hose) no leaks/kinks etc, and if a cable, all good clean connections.
The book recommends a minumim pressure of 2kpa @70C and 2500rpm with SAE30 oil. Same for 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0L. This is a minimum though and a health
motor should be higher than this.
As a Comparison, when cold, Andy (2L type 4, ready for re-build) sits on 4kpa at idle, 2.5kpa @70C and 2500rpm.
This drops rapidly when it heats up though. ~1/2kpa @100C and 700rpm (idle). This is only just above the pressure switch setting.
Just remember not only temperature affects this but also the oil you use. I run 15W50 oil.

I am confused now, as the gauges I see being used in kombi are up around 500kpa. So from what you are saying this guage wouldn't even move off
the rest.

off the rest.

Yes I think Andy means 200kPa (kiloPascals), not 2. Our normal atmospheric air pressure is 101.3kPa so your oil pressure should be more than that!
I have that same VDO electric gauge in my 2360cc Type 4 Kombi. At startup, with cold normal 20W-50 oil, the pressure is pretty much way off the gauge
(500kPa or more). As the motor warms up it drops back, and in normal cruise it sits on between 200 and 250 kPa. At idle with a hot motor it drops
right down so it barely registers. Still plenty there though as the stock warning light never comes on.
I have had trouble with my gauge needle flicking back and forth at very low pressure readings. I thought it was a bad earth but rewiring the earth
(even directly back) didn't help. I've spoken to others who've seen the same thing. I may have to update to a newer gauge - the latest
VDO gauges look great and have metal, not plastic, cases.

Just make sure you have the correct sender for the guage. Some people think they are all the same, but they forget there are different cars that run
at other kpa's to veedubs. The sender must have the same range as the guage.
