I've wondered if one is 'lots of love' and the other 'lots of laughs'

If my caps lock is on and I do LOL will someone get the wrong idea, lol :D

Dos anyone know what "ie" means?
It was used on typewriters many years ago. I use it occasionally..

A lot of those abbreviations I firstd used in old times on the BBS (Bulletin Board Service). When chatting on the internet with other users they were not overused like SMS which needs to be shortened, but helped to reflect emotions. Emoticons like :) were not available, you used them so the person reading what you had written would not take your comments the wrong way. A lol at the end of a sentance would mean you are only having fun.
Nothing worse than chatting and someone reads the other end VERY differently and takes offence.
So all you young whipper snappers with your SMS talk can go to buggery. LOL
