quick shift kit
are those quick shift kits any good?are they hard to put in?(Sbug) I saw them on "mickmotors" site 2 months or so ago.
any help out there?

They shorten the throw buy say 40%
They are easy to put in. You just put the plate under the shift plate.
Then you take your gear knob off and remove the spring and plate. Put the mushroom on and the other bits back. Then you bolt it back on the shift
plate and extender plate.
If you like a sport shift they are great. You should also replace the rear g'box coupler at the same time. This will really tighten up your
shifts. The short shift kit and a worn coupler will eccentuate(sp?) how worn it is.
You wanna check your shift rod bushing just in the tunnel. If this goes the gear stick gets an annoying rattle. Fiddly to change but easy-ish.
All 3 at once and under $50 and a mornings work. (crossed fingers)

Yeah
Both the quick shift kit and rod bushing are done through where the shifter sits in the tunnel.
The rear rod coupler is done at the access panel at the rear of the tunnel, from inside as well.

Just try the short shifter first, it may be all you need. Depends naturally on how much work your shift rod has done..
It may be OK...
The short shifter is simple to put in..
just mark where the original shifter plate is before You undo the bolts, so You can put it all together in the correct spot, as if You don't know
how to align the plates etc...
You will be hitting reverse all the time...

You can't hit reverse unless you push the button for the reverse lockout.
I had to play around with mine a bit to get it into reverse nicely.
Only draw back is it accentuates the inherant beetle problem when going from third back to second.
All you need is a quick shift for your leg and your laughing.

and chase up the bush and coupler monday.

Its very easy to hit reverse if the flat plate with the edge isn't in the correct position... and this is With OUT the quick shift kit..
same rule applies with the quickshift kit..

Hey guys a mate of mine helped me with putting on the quick shift kit today, let me tell you it does get a bit frustrating having to find the sweet
spot where to lock down the plates to get all the gears correctly again.
Mine is also having trouble going from third to second is this just a beetle thing or what? i would love to know.

Yep, its usually just a VW thing actually. Most vehicles I have driven that have a few miles on them (ie: almost all of them) have a bit of wear in
the gearbox. Unless you slow down until you feel that you are almost going too slow in 3rd before changing back to 2nd it will usually grind (at
best). Doesn't do it in any other gear, or when shifting from 1st to 2nd.
Interstingly, the g/boxes in out companies Suzuki swifts (all 76+ of them!)will usually start to become difficult to downshift from 3rd to 2nd a
couple of weeks before the 'boxes give up altogether. Apparently caused by a failing syncro on 2nd - I don't know how the internals of the
'boxes work, but I would have thought that this would cause problems when upshifting too....
So, if you are having no troubles with shifting up through the gears and only issues going back from 3rd to 2nd, then I feel that you could safely put
it down to a worn (but still useable) 'box.
Just my 5c!

I've got a quick shift kit with new coupling on my manx and I love it! It adds huge pleasure to my driving when I can quickly snap thru the
gears- Best $50 I spent so far I recon. I two have the crunch from 3rd down to 2nd- I think the shift kit makes it more noticable as the driving style
does change a bit with a sportier shift- on advice is to slow down a lot more before changing between gears- it wont do it then.

ok got the kit in today also bought a new bush and a new coupling
but have'nt put them in,beside where the hell does the bush go?? I think I know where the coupling goes...
