Starter hits the turbo!
Hey guys. Thanks for letting me join the forum. I have a 56 Oval with a 96 Subaru twin turbo 2.0 and a Porsche 901 trans with a 911 starter. The
starter selonoid hits the turbo. Anyone know of another starter that will work?

First up welcome  second why not modify the turbo housing to move it out
of the way? I imagibe that there would be a lot of cutting involved to get a big ass suby into a tiny oval rear so a bit more work won't kill
you  an dlastly bring on the pictures, video, stories whatever |

I really don't want to mess with the turbo. I think I may modify the starter mounts to twist it a little. The body is on a 1973 pan with 1988
Porsche 944 alumn. swing arms and disk brakes on the rear with 944 disks on te front also. Currently it has 911 rack and pinion steering and sway
bars from the rear of a Mazda Miata on the front and back. The engine and trans had to be moved forward 4 1/2" to get everything under the stock
body which led to a coilover rear suspension. Some photos are posted at http://photo.starblvd.net/junkyardoval.

there's an aftermarket starter over there in the US that lets you turn the body (of the starter) around inside the mounting bolts to put the
solenoid where-ever you want. I think it's a gear-reduction starter designed for the sand buggy boys. I remember seeing it in a Hot VW's or
a Sand Sport magazine.

 Problem solved. The starter from a Vanagon fits very well. I got
one from a friend who has just installed a Subaru 2.2 in his Vanagon. He had an extra. Will have to do a little cutting on the firewall, that will
be easy. The engine goes back in tomorrow. The friend is building the wiring harness and it should be ready next week. Still have to build the
exhaust system.
