My Mk2 GTI

Hey. Here is a couple of photos of my immaculate privately imported Mk2 GTI. It is a bit rare cos its got a real 8V GTI engine, factory sunroof, VW commissioned BBS alloys (complete with VW part number and logo stamped in the hub), and it looks this good after 200 000 kms.
It is almost completely standard and original!
It has won 4 trophies and was selected for the VW Jubilee celebrations in Sydney 2003.

I saw a MK2 GTI for sale up here recently;
what would something like that be worth roughly?
What does the '8V' refer to; 8 valve? They all would have that wouldn't they?
please excuse my ignorance, I want to understand a little before I check it out...

Depends how many miles are on it and what options it has. could be anywhere from $5K to $13K. I know of one with leather upholstery, electric everything, sunroof and cruise control for roughly $12K. I guess its the rarity factor as well, there aren't that many of them over here.

8V stands for 8 Valve as you said. 1 intake and 1 exhaust valve per cylinder. 16V would mean two of each per cylinder, hence the higher performance levels. 8 valves are more common over here in golfs up to A3 (Series or Mk 3). Newer golfs have 20V available, meaning 5 valves per cylinder, probably 3 intake and 2 exhaust.

Mk2 GTI's are kind of odd as far as values are concerned, as the locally imported ones from 91 to 93 had a crappy 90hp engine, and all up were far from the gtis available in europe either as 16valves or 8 valves. The price for local ones tend to drag down the older privately imported ones! They are usually not in as good condition as the older ones cos they werent treated as special. Also the GTI would need to have come from Germany, not South Africa, and if its been modified, price slumps!!!

Expect to pay 6-9k for a local, or 5-9 for a mod, or 6-13 for a special original private import!!!

What was the one you saw?

Oh, and the mk4 has gone back to tried and true 8 valve technology with the 1.6 and the 2.0. The GTI has a turbo version of the 20V. The original 1.8 engine in the golf that the 2.0l replaced was 20V.

Lots of info! Sorry! any other q's?

$10990 sounds like a dealer? (both price and price... Too expensive and stupidly close to 11k, but not quite....)

Dont bother about origin, its and Aussie, Car yards are reluctant to sell private imports.

Check on redbook.com.au There are usually a few Mk2s and they arent that expensive.

If you have any queries, email me

stevencrispin@yahoo.com.au

Cheers
