Do they have stainless or sodium exhaust valves?
How much are they?
If they only come with average valves, how much to get higher level valves fitted?

Hi Milt,
No personal experience, but I have been chasing heads for a while now. The best info I have so far suggests the heads are OK, but I have heard of a couple that have dropped a seat. Still haven't bought any yet but as Ben say's they will be better than heads that have been re-conditioned many times.
Trying to get them for a good price is a PITA though.

Helbus, as far as I know they only come with the sodium valves from the factory. Some performance places fit other valves.

That's about the best I've gotten in Brissy also. Problem is they pass through about 4 hands before us poor beggers get them :(
The joys of distribution :o
Never looked into getting different valves though.
Oh, just so you all know AMC do make 3 styles, 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.0L square port heads. The Aussie import has/does bring in all 3.

Hi Ben,
Sorry if it came across that way, but my comments were not directed at you (or mechanics in general). I can take an educated guess as to what the factory sells the heads for, and know what the going sell price is on the street, and it annoys me that there are two or three whole salers/distributors making more profit from the heads than the poor manufacturers and mechanics.

I know it's a fact of life, and nothing new, but I still don't have to like it.

Andy, I'm sorry if the idea of people operating their businesses in such a way as to make a profit offends you, but it is the way of the world. If you don't want to face reality, join the Greens! Or buy some heavily discounted parts and try to run them - honest businessmen like Ben and Mick will be around to rescue you...

What you quoted was a reasonable price for type 4 heads - make note of the warning Ben made. Stainless is great for resisting high spring pressures and radical cams, but it's not as hard or strong as the original trimetal material. Sodium-filled valves have superior cooling, but they will cost more than your quoted price for heads - each. (they also have a very short service life.)
