Fit motor to gearbox problems

I'm just up to putting a 1600 into my '71 Super Beetle 'S'.
Now I replaced the throw out bearing and replaced the sleeve that the bearing slides in and out of. The sleeve with the three bolts, with the oil seal behind it.
Now my problem is, when I'm sliding the engine on to the splined shaft, it only goes within half an inch of mating with the tranny and then stops and won't go any further. Is the throw out bearing sleeve (that's what I call it), interfering with the 'clutch ring' (that's what I call it anyway), that the throw out bearing comes in touch with when the clutch is depressed? In other words, is the sleeve to long? Should I cut about half an inch off the end of the throw out bearing sleeve? Or is my problem something else? I've been running the car for about 2 years without the sleeve installed. I only put it back in when I replaced the throw out bearing, thinking it's in there for a reason. What that is, I don't know. No other tranny setup has got them in. Does anyone have any ideas.

Not really sure, but did you have the pressure plate off? If so did you align the friction plate properly when re-assembling?
Just a guess.

No Andy, that was a different motor/setup.
I've got 4 Beetles that drive, with two that are registered. So that's probably how easy it can be, to get confused.
This engine has come out of an other Beetle and was running very well.
Any ideas?
