HD Side Plate & Super Diff

G'day Guys and Gals

Wanted to get some thoughts on Heavy Duty Side Plates and Super Diffs.

I recently spoke with Lawrence out at German Auto's here in Brissy and he recommended installing both of the HD Side Plate and Super Diff in the gear box I will probably get him to recondition.

Has anyone had any experience with these/or currently have them in their gear boxes, if so thoughts???

I know these can be brought in from CB Performance, does anyone have them here in Aus??

I have also heard there is a cheaper Brazilian HD Side Plate available (slightly cheaper than the States, but also of less quality) does anyone know of these??

Does anyone have any of these that they are willing to sell, or is this an item that is recommend to be purchased new??

The gearbox I am talking about I bought off Keith H. so not sure if you'll read this Keith but you have probably put the gearbox through its paces, have you any thoughts on this??

Any other advice on experiences, general info, prices and where they can be bought from in Aus would be great.

Sorry for the 20 question, but if you don't ask, you don't learn.

Cheers

Brad

What horsepower are you running through it and how will you drive it? Superdiff and HD sideplates reduce flex (and theoretically wear) on ring and pinion in high horsepower (read smoke em up/drag) applications....

If its a 1600 its overkill. If its higher HP but you're not into 'boiling the skins' it's probably overkill...

If you're HP'd and draggin then weld the gears to the carriers to - stops em spinning..........

Sorry to cut in a respond for you Brad, I just had the info on hand so thought I'd butt in!

Engine is a 2110 with street eliminators (42x37.5), 1.5:1 rockers, K8 cam, 48 dells, lightened flywheel and 2300lbs Kennedy pressure plate....10.2:1 compression = decent amount of horsepower.

IRS Gearbox currently standard 1/2, close welded (1.4) 3rd and (1.04) 4th with 4.125 r&p. Custom 3.1/2.0 mainshaft.

I am helping Brad with his body off resto (hence the reason why I have this info)....knowing him I don't think he will be able to resist too many hard starts and accelerations from light to light....right Brad?

I did the super diff and H/D sideplate thing for my L-bug G/B - sourced from CB, although I think nearly bloody everything in the VW aftermarket is Mexican/Brazilian.

I haven't put it in yet, but I'd wished i'd done some more research because it seems that in addition to the diff and sideplate, you really do need to add welded 3+4 syncro hubs (i think that's them), HD shift forks and HD woodruff keys for the G/B to stand a fighting with a hi-po motor.

No probs on the cutting in Al, and yes ....lets just say that it won't be one of those cars that is only driven 2 kms to church every Sunday, the "Calvinator" will be an angry little man, and I don't think he'll enjoy just puttering around.

Bugmeister...and idea on what it cost you to land those items you have already purchased....and how much more it would be to land they other items you recommend??

I purchased the items with alot of others from CB performance. Declare the items for a 60'ish Beetle and you'll only get 3% duty + 10% GST which helps a bit. Although CB are cheap, they only ship express UPS, so you maybe able to save a little money looking elsewhere and shipping surface. I've heard if you ship USPS (as oposed to UPS) and your goods don't get inspected you'll be hit with 17% 'engine parts' duty or something like that, which is what I think happened when I imported my TIV crank.

The dollar is currently pretty good so I would guess even with shipping and duty you'll be still way better than purchasing in OZ.

I would probably try to talk to Bruce Tweedle (on CLF and STF) as he definately seems to know his gearboxes and since vw power is more accessible over there (cost wise), what he'll recommend will probably be tried and tested.

BTW, just go to CB's website for prices, from memory the diff costed US150 (~OZ$300) and sideplate US$50 (~OZ$100). They are also very speedy with freight quotes. They seem to also have rhino G/B cases on special, although i've heard info either way on those.

Hi

Forget the side plates and just buy the superdiff. The side plates are mostly junk that dont fit properly to VW tolerances.

Also I've read you need to enlarge the oiling holes in the superdiff to avoid starvation. Not sure if it's true though.

Steve, does a Kombi box fit into a type 1 setup? If so, which box exactly. ie 1700,1800, 2000. Would any mods need to be done to these boxes for it to handle say 150hp?
Thanks,
Hutcho

Hi

They can be made to fit, 2000 is the best as its has the tallest final drive, but you need to buy a full set of ratios for anything like performance work as the Kombis are pretty low geared, you also need to get a Berg nose cone and mounting system and you will also need to do a bit of surgery on the car as well, but they are much stronger than a type 1 box. Do a search on the web for more info.

You can get away with a type 1 box with a high hp motor but just dont try to impress the guys down the pub with too many burnouts or you be walking a fair bit.
