kombi battery not charging
Why not?
I'm not getting the 14ish volts I should get at the battery. I should shouldnt I? How do I check an alternator and a regulator?

If You still have the Generator and regulator, which I presume You should have... You need a multiMeter to check the voltage but checking the current
in amps is a bit more harder. But You do need at least 14 volts to charge the battery... Is the generator light ON??
If its NOT.. then Your battery may be gone. Check Your generator brushes..
otherwise its probably your Regulator..

hmm waits for someone to give me a helpful answer.
no generator I have a type 4 alternator. Battery is fine. It has been starting the kombi and powering lights and wipers for 2 days now. I have my
multimeter and I am not getting a charge at the battery. Hence the thread was started. I assume that if I put my multimeter into the right wire at the
back of the plug at the regulator I will be able to see if its charging. Just need some bright spark to tell me which one. Or maybe it aint that easy and thats why an electrician has a job.

Yep thats why you take it to the Auto Elect,.... much easier
you can remove n replace the Alternator your self...

Alternator provides current, voltage will depend on load and regulator.
So if you have a combination of discharged battery and a number of things on (lights' radio etc) you will not get 14V across your terminals even
with a good alterternator.
Simple checks to perform: (voltmeter across battery terminals)
Battery, everything OFF should read ~12V or slightly under.
Start car, voltage shouldn't drop below ~9V while cranking.
Once running and all acceseries off, engine has been reved a few times so alt light turns off voltage should read ~13.5-14V.
First two tests confirms battery condition, last confirms charging system. If the batteries fine, and charging system is faulty (sounds like your
problem). First simple check is go over all cables and connections are good and CLEAN (oh, don't forget to check drive belt). Second simple check
is replace the regulator (if you have access to a know working one) and test again.
If this isn't the problem, it's a good chance it's the alternator. Major PITA, so maybe worthwhile checking with an auto elec. before
ripping this one out.
About the only thing you can check on the alternator if you pull it is the field winding brushes and bearings, the rest is beyond me!

I assume everything was working before you pulled motor out & it is not correct since putting motor back in? in which case surely it would be just
a connection somewhere , rather than something that is goiung to cost money, I would just go through absolutely every connection again really
carefully, when I put my motor back in I was greeted with the same problem, but can't for the life of me remember which connection I wiggled to
fix it
Please, I need drivers side window regulator (winder mechanism) for my '54

Definitely check and clean the major connections before doing anything drastic (like paying money!). In particular the battery terminals, the earth
straps (the one from the battery and the one to the gearbox), and the connections on the starter solenoid.

Whatever the problem was, it has dissappeared. Charging at 13.7 volts now.
I've got 3 engines strewn across the garage floor, so I dont know which bits came off where. One of the regulator alternator combinations was
weird and the light was on when it should have been off. It was a wierd looking obviously the wrong regulator. The PO fixed it by sticking 2c over the
light with chewing gum. Wasnt sure if that was the one I picked up or not. Anyway, problem gone away for now.
