VW Club Web Webmaster / Computer people question !!!

Ok here is a question for all you VW club computer people and Webmasters.

I am almost finished rebuilding the Mick Motors website with full online catalogue and some other cool features. One of the things I am planning on doing is putting up a VW Events list. The isdea is that a represntive or two from each club will be given a Login and password to enter events into our DB. Then these will be displayed 1 mth in advance on the main page and in full details on the events page.

Do you think this is worth the hassle ? What we are trying to do is get all the events in one place, in order and with accurate details.

Comments ???

look... JUST A SUGGESTION... whether its wat ur goin for or not...

could you not have a Klub VW link or aussieveedubbers on the micks motors page and near that link 'check this out for upcoming group events'

Is it micks motors responsibility to promote the club events? if its kewl to promote this stuff on the site i'd say go for it... bcos u'll get ppl who aren't lookin at JOINING a club but lookin for mechanical reasons and by chance get hooked into joining :D which would b teriffic :thumb Hopefully :P

Feedback is great.

The idea that I am thinking of is like an event calendar sort of thing without all the crap.

This site is great and all but tends to scare some people off due to the amount of crap that is posted all over the place.

What I am thinking is much simplier that Aussieveedubbers, basically an event date, event name, event details and event contact. The info is all driven from teh database and it simply puts them onto the main page 30 days prior and orders them there until the date has passed.

I am looking to encourage clubs to actually post the details in one easy spot. There is a lot of events that don't make it onto here.

If you think it is better to just point people here then that is fine, just trying out ideas.

sounds good:thumb....I found this site by rumerging thruogh the "mickmotors"site.I think brads right there, are people out that go onto Micks site for parts, not to join a club but if they see that there's a local DUB event on they more than likely go to one...I think

I am guessing from the response that if I did bother to code it and set it all up no one from the clubs would use it anyway.

Oh well more time for buggy building ..

Those would be my thoughts ... there is too much hassle and stuffing about involved with usernames and passwords ... the most simple - and its still the easiest to control is a simple "If you have an upcoming event or function, that you would like to post on our site ... email us" With a little 'mailto:etc@mail.com?='Event Mailing' or soething along those lines ...

It has been my experience that the amount of time - code, and stuffing about involved in setting up a database for these purposes is greatly outweighed by the lack of support it recieves from users of the site ... it would be different on a site such as this one where there is massive amounts of posting - and it essentially what this website is about.

The Mick Motors website is a shopping site, generally not the first place I would look, for upcoming events - yes it's a nice feature, but realistically, I don't think it would be utilised enough to warrant the work and effort you are thinking about putting in.

Just some thoughts ...

Cheers

Excellent idea but DaWiz has pretty much hit it on the head here as far as whether average punters will bother to use it or not.

I presume you will be using a PHP driven database which makes entries and updates a complete doddle for even the most PC challenged luddite! Pretty much like a weblog (blog).

I built and run a large and very popular website for superkart racing in Australia and time and again I have offered, cajoled, begged, threatened and whatever else to get clubs and other individuals to use this very same feature and to be honest, the response is usually dismal at very best.

I spent more time chasing the clubs in all the states for event details and in the end I just gave up as most of the clubs just could not be bothered to forward me anything.

I just gave that up completely in the end and just plaigairised their sites after events for any info I could get.

My 2 bobs worth anyway.
Good luck with it tho.
