Kombi type 4 pistons
Does anyone know if there is a way to identify what brand pistons & cylinders you have in a type 4 motor?
I would like to identify what brand the ones coming off the motor I am doing up are.
Also, I have been told if the ring grooves are OK in your pistons you can hone the old cylinders, get new rings and re-use them. Is this a good
option? (over sizes for type 4 motors seem to be non existant)
Not that I want to do that, just wondering if it's worth getting them done and keeping as spares.

Hone and rings works fine.. I had first O/size in my 2 L when I did it up 2 yrs ago. At last report was running fine with 40000 ks, size stamped on
top of piston. Having moved house since then, i don't think I kept records of actual measurements..best of luck

Measured up, all seem ~94.0 at the bottom of the barrel and ~94.1 at the top (of ring travel). No score marks, and slightly out of round.
Much better than expected.

Andy,
Is this the engine you were going to put the counter weighted crank into? so it would last longer?
I would be buying a new piston and barrell kit before a counterweighted crank. you won't get the life you want out of re rung used pistons.

Is there any reason you couldn't find a machinist willing to clamp them down with torqueing plates and remachine them oversize?
I'm sure somebody could find a disadvantage to this that I'm not aware of, other than the problem of finding pistons to suit...

Hi, Thanks Dave, yes it's for the same motor, BUT they will not be used on this re-build!!!!! I was just wondering if that is worth doing and
keeping them as spares.
As for the counter weighted crank, if modifying the stock one turns out to be an easy option I will do it, otherwise I will just spend a bit extra on
getting the whole assembly properly balanced. Actually confirming what most people recommended a flat 4 VW should be pretty well balanced anyway!
Hi Col, the problem with oversizing is getting other pistons. I know phil74camper has used other pistons (chev or something) but don't know what
is involved in fitting them. It looks like I have tracked down some German KS 1mm oversize pistons, but will see what turns up before getting
excited!!

Here they are, 1mm oversize Kolbenschmidt KS pistons ready for ceramic coating. 
Looks like I won't be keeping the old ones as spares anyway. Maybe I can turn them down to fit into and 1800 :o
