Kombi won't start. PLEASE HELP

Kombi was running rough and would not start. 11Cab came over and checked everything out. Established that spark plugs were stuffed. Fuel was OK. Put in two new spark plugs and went OK.

I put in the other 2 spark plugs in and new points and now it wont start.

It is 2 litre with extractors and twin dellorto carbs.

I have set points at 0.016".

Any one have any idea's on what could be wrong, PLEASE HELP.

probably better to set points a bit wider (up to .020), sounds like you missed putting a connection back somewhere, did you put the rotor button back on? stupid question , but many people caught by this, also , turn engine until points are closed turn igniton on & open & close with a small screwdriver to see if there is a spark & they have power:(

Rotor button is in. Will set points wider and do the spark test.

Let's hope it works.

Thanks kombikim.

the wider gap wouldn't make it start, it is just better to set at widest specified gap initially as the points close up slowly as they wear

New points were'nt sparking real well. Put in old ones and they were sparking better.

Still won't start though.

they are not supposed to spark much, that is the purpose of the capacitor, I assume the engine doesnt even cough & that you have checked that the timing is correct, because it changes substantially when you change points

Have'nt checked timing. Thought I had to get it started to do the timing.

How do I check timing when I can't start it?

it is the 009, most likely
connect the timing light & see what reading in degrees the highest advance is, should be 32 degrees I think, at about 3500 revs

With timing light, it is idling at about 16 deg and when I rev it, it advances to about 40 deg. Not sure how many revs thats at though.

Adjusted the timing back to 10 deg. The advance is now about 32 deg. Took it for a run and the flat spot has gone.

All seems well:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce

Thanks for all your help:D

Hope it starts OK tomorrow

I've been away for a few days and this is where it's at.

Well the kombi didn't start again the next day and I have'nt been able to start it again since.

I seem to be able to get it started with a bit of stuffing around, but it goes back to it's old ways after a sleep and won't start.

:cry

Have a look at the picture of the crap new points i got.
Dont think cause you put new points in you have fixed something.
Take the points out of the holder and make sure they have spring.
I know it is a bad picture but you can see the things i bought were almost touching when new.

UPDATE

The coil was the cause of the starting problem. After installing new coil in the beast it starts first go every time.

It was running rough though. Installed new condenser and petrol filter and she is running like a dream.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

We should do a back search on how many times the coil has been the culprit!

I know it was the cause of my Webers misbehaving in the early days.

Yeah got the condenser in with not too much trouble. Kombi is still running rough intermitenly (spelling?) though. Will change points and re-do timing tomorrow. Hopefully will solve problem.

No worries with the move 11cab. Let us know when your ready for the next one

Put new points in and timed it. Running like a dream now:thumb

It's amazing the difference a new coil, plugs, points, petrol filter and condenser make to the running of a car.

For under $100 my ute is running beautifully.
