Biggest problem i have heard of is you cant get new bearings. Also a set of hoses for the H2O is in the vacinity of $2k - ouch!
Cant you get a air cooled version the same?
What is the motor like in the one you are looking at?
Seen a Subaru 1800(?) drob in nicely though

My '89 Caravelle has 145000 k's and the engine has never been touched, and I know of another that has over 20000 K's same story. But
they have always had the correct VW coolant, and mine has always been run on Premium unleaded fuel.
The auto tranny, thats another story, pile of crap. This will be the 3rd time its been done, leaking auto fluid into the diff oil. Last time was a
completely rebuild auto $1500 worth, and that was doing all the remove and installing myself.
Should have bought a manual and put an old 4 speed in it. |

hmmm...Dave i had heard that the auto box was as tough as nails.
I guess i will find out soon enough myself. If i ever get Daisy on the road.....she has one. She is a 2L 82 type 2 air cooled.

Hi
I also use genuine coolant and distilled water. I would doubt that you would need to replace all of the hoses, my motor has been in since 1988 and
still uses many original hoses. I have replaced 2 water pumps.

Hi - I am also looking at a watercooled bus (84). I had an 82 aircooled and very much regret selling it.
Is it possible to drop a 2l aircooled engine in the watercooled bus?

T25 engine switch'o chang'o
I've just bought a watercooled bus witha manual box and a dead 1600 turbo diesel...gonna stick a Subaru 3.3 six in it....Should fit nicely, cheap
to buy, cheap to run, loads of grunt and cheap to replace if it should go bang!
Does anyone know anyone who has done this? I remember reading a story in one of the Aussie VW mags years ago about some guy in Adelaide that did
it...And I think Hellbug did it too!
Can't wait!

Subi option
I v'e done some measurements and I reckon the Subi is the go.....It fits like a glove, has power/torque to spare, can be sourced locally and you
can get them for as little as 1800 bucks! $2500 approx get the whole front cut...But you still need a computer to run it! I have seen the 2.7 engine
advertized for as little as $900...To top it all off...It has the right sound!
