You need to know if its a 3 stud cam, or a 4 stud deep dish cam, these are on the later engines

According to info. at Type2.com, an AD case is a 1600 replacement:
"(Never supplied in new cars -- only sold over the counter. All are
dual-relief with 10mm oil passages)."
no year was given.

Short answer: Good.
Longer answer: VW had a single, 2-function pressure relief valve which controlled both direction and pressure; they later split this into 2 valves
each with one function, thus the "dual oil pressure relief" case. This was not so important, the old relief valve worked fine; however, *at
the same time* they increased the case oil passages to 10 mm (from, I dunno, something smaller...) to allow more oil flow to the heads; this is the
good bit. Most hi-po Type I engine builders use "dual relief" cases for this reason.

The only way to be sure if it is a 3 or 4 bolt cam is to pull the oil pump and have a look. You cant be sure that it hasnt been rebuilt.
You are going to have to pull the pump for the new one anyway, so......
With the case as well it "should" be a 8mm stud case saved as opposed to 10mm not saved?
This is also a desirable factor. The 10mm studs grew move and pulled out of the none saved case holes

yep
case savers are good
A case with savers and 10mm studs though makes a bad contender for boring for bigger cylinders. 8mm and savers is the choice. 10mm and no savers is
last choice
