Toonup time for Isabel

I plan to service my splitty next weekend and have a question for the cable of knowledge.
It has a 12v 1500 or 1600 sp motor which still runs great till it warms up after which it runs shitty, like its starved of fuel or not running on all cylinders , it wont rev out and is down on power.
It this likely to be ,
leads?
points?
fuel problem?
or what?
I am chasing an ignition module to suit a standard vacume distributer to replace the points .
thinking about this,

Thanks in advice in advance.

I would start by checking your tappets, sounds like they are set too tight when hot. Get a Cold morning, do not start engine, just do tappets, set at .004 inches but must be dead cold. the stock ignition is fine to 5000rpm+ if in good condition. A hall or optical sensor saves a bit of mucking about and maintains timing over much longer period. A capacitor discharge ignition can be got from Jaycar or dickie smiths in kit form. I had excellent results from mine some years ago, easier starting and a bit more grunt in top gear, ie easier hill climbing and it was noticeable but not awe inspiring. Set your timing, engine cold as per specs for your dizzy, ussually about 10 BTDC. Take the dizzy cap off and rotate dizzy til points spark with notch in pulley lined up. leave it at that. put cap back on. Then replace plugs etc. always clean HT wires and connectors and dizzy cap. I replace condensor and points every 15000ks or yearly.
have fun

they took me away haha, hope the medication works

Before you go chasing problems you need to do a tune up. As part of this, I would replace all the ignition bits if you don't know when they were last done. Cheap to do and then you at least know they're OK.

As for the ebay electronic ignition, I would not touch it until I was certain it fitted my distributor. The kits tonyg mentioned are no longer available from dick smith or jaycar - guess there wasn't the demand. That said, I have seen the basic model Mallory CDI for US$105 delivered which would make it cheaper than the kit was!

Mitch
Start with the simple things

Plugs, points, dissy cap rotor button, tappets, ignition timing, air filter clean n re oil, oil and oil strainer clean. Check vacuum advance unit and fuel pump push rod length.

Is the pre heat tube on the inlet maiifold clear ???

Is there any exhaust leaks ???

Once all the know things are fine then start on the fuel system

Check n clean the tank, replace fuel tank strainer, replace plastic in line filter or fit on on the gravity side of the carby.

clean n check the carby, fit and re adjust

Get a fuel analiser on it and check the jetting to make sure fuel air ration is good.

Stay away from fancy ignition systems you dont need to waste your money on this stuff for a great stock bus.

Also Dave (et all) yes I agreed the bus stays stock. The problem I had with the rough running was due to the coil which was very old and had vertually given up. It worked oK whilst cold but as soon as it was warmed up it didnt cope . Changed the coil and it worked a treat. Thought I might pass this on to enlighten anyone with similar woes.
