auto choke or not to auto choke.


i am considering following Muirs lead and disconnecting the auto chokes from my 73 bus. should i do so or did VW know what they were doing when they put them on?

I disconnected mine a year ago - have not needed them since - flat spot when really cold for a minute or 2, I just take off accordingly & that is with an Auto
I should also say this included O temp mornings in central Aust.

You shouldnt need them here in HOT Aussie, however if you were living in the snowy mountains then it would be different.

They do help your engine warm up more quickly.

i currently have them on but dont think they do a great job. i get a flat spot when cold anyway. when it is hot and i stop for a few minutes it revs high unecessarily when i restart the bus. i will give it a go with the flaps fully open and see how it goes. i can always go back.

I used to get the same problem. I ran the carb with the choke off all the time. I just needed to keep the revs bubbling when sitting at the lights, otherwise it'd stall... If you can setup a manual choke (its going backwards, I know..) you can turn it off when moving and turn it on at the lights so you dont have to rest ya foot on the accel pedal...:thumb

Check to see if your mainfold pre heat pipe isnt block with exhaust carbon.

Fit a new one if it is and you wont get this problem anymore.
