Meeting the Tassie ferry on the 23rd

OK I've cased out the situation at the ferry on a Saturday:thumb

It was a warm sunny day and so people were out in their droves at Port Melbourne. Lots of lobsters baking in thje sun at the London. People streaming out of Rex's Delish Fish. Cafes full and people on the beach, plus all of the bladers and walkers. Virtually nothing in the way of parking near the pier, but I did get a spot out side the gym. All the nearby back streets were full.

For some reason the car park, which is next to where all of the semi's going on the ferry are parked, was closed. I was wondering why it was empty so checked it out (?)

Sat at the Greek restaurant at the end of the pier and had a drink while I watched what happened when the cars come off.

They have a new system because of the cars waiting on the pier to board in the evening. There is a new ramp so that the cars head pretty much straight off of the pier now.

They send the cars in two directions - some to the left and past the Greek place I was at, and then others where being sent through the semi trailer parking lot and out onto Beach St. This was to keep a flow of veihicles happening. It was taking a while for cars to get out into the area near the cafes because of the local traffic.

There will be no telling which direction the Tassie cars will be sent.

There was a non-stop stream of cars bumper to bumper driving out of the area, so pulling out into it was a wait.

I found an area with plenty of parks as it is a no standing work zone until 5pm and it was the other side of Bay St, on Beach Rd.

It is a small service road just before and opposite the Port Melbourne Life Saving Club.

Cross over Bay St - the first main intersection you come to after leaving the ferry.

Beach Rd does a curve. There is a big new MODERN block of appartments on your left on the start of the curve. Life Saving Club would be just ahead and opposite.

Turn immediately left after the appartments into Esplanade East (a street), then immediately right into the service room.

This is really less than a minute up the road from the ferry if you don't get the lights at Bay St.

It is heading in the direction we need to go to get to Nepean Hwy & Dromana.

I can be standing by the road to watch out for you anyway.

Any one else want to meet up with us and cruise down to Dromana Drive-in if you can't make it to the 4.30?

I'm going to be there before 6 pm 'cos I like to watch the ferry come in. The cars did start leaving the ferry dead on 6.30 pm so anyone wanting to join us would need to be at the meeting place by that time.

My mobile # is 0402108050

Greg, others how does that sound? (Hopefully clearer than mud!)

I'll be in touch

Map of Port Melbourne

Look to the right of Lagoon Pier, above the bold 'ST' on the bend is Esplanade East.

Turn left here then right into the service road.

Let me know if this is OK.
