Hey there,
Whats the best temperature gauge to stick into my engine?
And how do I go about doing it?

go for VDO and get an electric oil sender and gauge. make sure it is not for water.
not sure what vw you have but for bus get someone to drill and tap a hole in sump plate (circle plate about 100mm in diameter.
Save water, drive an air cooled Volkswagen.

sump plug sender or dipstick sender
I have a sender that screws into the oil drain hole in the sump plate...
I haven't used it yet... but seems like a good idea... others say the dipstick temp sender was the best...

I've also heard the dipstick senders are better because -
- the temp at dipstick sensor is hotter
- sender that screws into the oil drain hole in the sump plate is susceptible to being damaged

the position ewhere they both test the temp is exactly the sme in 2ltr bus engine, not sure about beetle or others. if the sender on the bottom gets
damaged then you have probably lowered your vw too much.
i just didnt realy want wires hanging down for the dipstick sender and it was 3-4 times the price of the sump plate sender.

brucey did you get your temp gauge fitted. how does it work? so it looks like you are going to keep all your vw's did you get the golf.
