I mentioned this before.
Anti-virus:
Install one and KEEP IT UPDATED! At the very least once a week.
Never open an email attachment that is not a known image file such as .jpg, .gif, .bmp or rarely, .tif or movie files such as .mov and .mpeg.
If you cant identify the attachment file extension as an image or you dont trust the sender then just delete the files.
if the file contains any kind of executable such as .pif, .scr, .exe and so-on just delete it.

A common falacy is that just by downloading the executable that your system is infected. This is crap! The executable file must be actually opened or run (executed, hence Executable) to infect the system.

Spam:
NEVER, EVER respond to spam messages that ask you to "click here" to be "removed from our database"
You will simply be added to a thousand other databases as a valid email address. This is a beauty and will guarantee legions of junk mail from there on.

Install a simple anti-spam programme. These are cheap or free and are lightweight applications that look at the addresses from potential spammers and when a mail is identified as spam the mails are loaded into a "Spam" folder.
These can be later deleted.
Any spam that makes it thru has not bee identified by anyone else using the programe so when you click on the "Spam" button any mails sent from that addy again will be identified as spam to all other users of the programme.
Basically the more users the bigger the database.
Avoid any spam programme that "bounces" identified spam or auto-replies.
This is creating spam in itself and further clogging the web!
Those email addies that spam appear to come from are never monitored aliases and will simply generate a bounce back to you!
I use a simple and lightweight spam proggie called SpamFighter. It is free and catches over 95% of spam.

There you have it.

I work in the security industry. There are bugs in all code, regardless of who designed/ran the operating system. Malware writers use these bugs / features / capabilities to spread.

Linux and Macs have had viruses in the past and will in the future. Obviously nowhere near as many as the dominant platform of the day, but it's simply inevitable.

Sorry, never meant to imply that macs were immune. Just that there hasn't been a malevolent virus on the mac for around 4 years.

When you have such a small piece of the computing pie, virus writers leave you alone.

The only danger is forwarding on an infected email or file to a pc user.

I knew it! I've reignited the old mac Vs PC war. Give me a mac anyday (and I've got both). Never had a virus or even an anti virus program.

I may be new here but I know a load of crap when I read it...

Didn't really want to get dragged into a macs vs peecee debate.

Have fun with your viruses.

A load of crap eh?

Dude, if you dont have something constructive to add to a relevant topic (Load of crap) then keep your mouth shut K!

The issue of virus infections is certainly no "load of crap" and neither is the discussion on it.
PC V's Mac, Mac V's PC, both do the same job, both are just as suceptible to a virus infection as each other 'cept there are way less viruses actually WRITTEN with a Mac in mind. Since that vast majority of machines are NOT Mac, then why would a coder spend all that time writing some malicious script when there is little effect to be had.
Of course he will target the dominant platform where he can do the most damage with the minimum effort.

The Pee-Cee V's Mac debate is almost as mindless as the old Beta V's VHS video debate.
To dismiss as "a load of crap" a discussion regarding virus infections regardless of the platform they are aimed at is foolish and is "a load of crap" in itself.
Pheeww, I feel better now!!!:vader

When I said load of crap I was referring to this ignorant generalisation.

I wasn't referring to the virus thing. Sorry for the confusion and unintended offence. Damn this place is friendly.
