Gearbox durability?

Hey all

How durable are the beetle/ghia gearboxes? How much extra power can they take before becoming unreliable?

Also whats the best way to check a gearbox when buying car? I am only aware of the 2nd speed synchro problems...

Thanks
Pavel

the type 1 boxes are pretty strong, they can take up to about 100hp or so in stock form, although doing drag style starts all the time with even a stocker will shag the tranny eventually.

Popping out of 4th gear is typically a sign of a worn tranny, excessive noise indicates age, look for excessive leaking of gearbox oil.

generally the trannys are pretty tough and there arent many things to go wrong with them.
