The only things you should have to be careful of are the height and side angle of view.

We ALL Do it, don't We, change tail lights!!

Well I do know of a lot of VW owners that do, or have switched VW tail lights... from one model VW to another.. etc..
I am using tail lights with reversing lights in them, in My 1968 autobug..
As Clint said, so long as they are visible,
You will have no worries. I have seen one tail light Up & the other one down....

Although I have seen a lot of 4WDs with bull bars that are in front of headlights etc. Especially older bullbars that came from a different brand of vehicle... but then thats a different story...

Personally I think the original tail lights off a 1970 beetle would be good. Why not use the originals?

Tail Lights & tail lights

1962-67 tail lights are used a bit.
I prefer the 72 tail lights with the clear bit at the bottom.. or You could fit oval tail lights and have the Blinkers seperate on the bumper.. or the Elephants foot...
Extra large tail lights... You can get them now that are flush with the guards like new Beetles...
