Help? Spring on pedal assembly.

So i decided to fix up my assembly and when i put it back together i could not remember where the spring went.

As far as i can work out it is there for the brake pedal, but the way the spring is it only fits to push the pedal to the floor not return it and that just does not make sense to me.
Is this correct or am i being simple???

If its an early (6V) Beetle.
Sounds like you have it back to front!
Just take it off again and turn it around, so it forces the pedal back up, you have to have the horse shoe at the back of the the pedal shaft, not in front.
I hope I havent confused you more!
Rob..

Yes the spring returns the brake pedal. the hook end goes around the brake pedal and the other end of the spring which is straight presses against the floor.

My motto is that if it fits better one way it must be the wrong way!
