[Starting in August 1964 (1965 models) VW started to use a nine-digit chassis number. The first three numbers give information about the kind of vehicle it is and the year it was made and the last six numbers are the chassis numbers. At the beginning of each model year (August), the last six digits start with 000,00 1. For example: 316,050,000 means a Type 111, 1 stands for sedan or fastback and the 6 for 1966, the 50,000th made that year.

You may be able to work out your variant from there..

Hmmmm

So I have now got a Choice between a 1956 or a 1966 Bug.... Hmmm still not shure..
Some of the tables say it is a 56 and one of the replys above (Thanks) says it would be a 66....????

Let me try and break down what I have worked out... tell me where I go wrong...

19-
this part says that it is a Type one bult in australia..
--666
So from what I am told one of these numbers is the Last Digit of the year.. So 6 for 56 or 66..
Could it be so Easy as to mean "1966" Im not sure..
What do the rest of the numbers mean...?
Most of the tables say they have different meanings depending on weather the car is like Pre/Post 64...
Ahhhh so close yet soo far..

BTW any one got a manual Swingaxle Box to fit this 56 maby 66... Well worth a Try..

Thanks for all the Info guys..

1966 for sure...

I believe its a 1966 model chassis...
They didn't use 9 digit chassis numbers in 1956...

They still made swing axle chassis's in 1972 in the standard 1300cc Beetle.

cheers

Sweet...

So it is settled... I have a a 66 floor Pan..

Now my next Question, will any SWINGAXLE box (1500 for Strenth/Ratio's)
fit in the chassis, with regards to the Shift linkage and or 'NoseCone'...

ALSO, there are DiscBrakes on the rear so it I score a 'Drum to Drum' replacement Box, will it be straightforward to swap out the Drums for the Disks...

Will I have to Swap over My Tunnels and Axles onto the New box..?

I will be getting a Manual in the next day or so but I am sure there will not be much info concerning the brakes considering I am guessing that these DiscBreaks are a MOD...

So I am almost there.. just need the Car to arrive at my place and to fing a Box..!

BTW, The engine is a Subaru so no probs there,

Thanks again for all the Help..

the 1500 gearbox should be OK... Brakes OK

I am sure that a 1500 gearbox will fit into the 66 chassis.... as far as I know only the super beetles were different, but My son has had a couple of the them in His Baja without any hassles... Maybe the 1303S had something different...
The front gearbox mount IS different for 67s> so I was told by Mick Motors... but a Nolathane mounting kit [gearbox & engine mounts] My Son bought was for most models... so if You buy a Nolathane kit it will fit Your chassis & gearbox... the front gearbox mount is universal .....
Its difficult to say about the rear disc brakes.... as they were NEVER an option.. they have been sourced elsewhere....
You would need everything that bolts onto the axle housing... like if You buy a gearbox complete with axles & brakes , backing plate..etc.... it should all bolt straight on....
and You won't need to cut Your tunnel etc.
