baja with 1600 twinport engine.....(and holden carbie...yup tis a rat!)..:puke

Ok, today (after spending day changing generator?alernator,,,whatever its called in mine,,don't know just happy my wiring worked and it didn't catch fire when starting it up!lol)...I was finally getting the idling right,, when i noticed some smoke...........coming from the overflow pipe,, where you pour the oil in.... eekk is that what they call the dredded blowback?? I took the oil cap off,, and yup,,, nice gentle flow of smoke...

It hasn't been leaking a heap of oil, nor has it been burning it up., engine is smoke free... no blue haze down highway.lol

is this normal or do I start getting my spare engine ready to roll??

Some "blowby" is normal.
What setup do you have?
Do you have the top pipe connected to the aircleaner? Is the rubber "valve" on the bottom pipe?

Thats what i was hoping old dubber, some "blowby!!" being normal, The aircleaner is not connected to anything other than the carbi, and as for the top pipe, or rubber valve on the bottom pipe,,,? err there is basically one pipe running towards the ground, off the oil filler tube,, all heating pipes etc have all been stripped.

The engine had been idling for about 10 mins (to cure some muffler putty;)) and I was thinking maybe the pipe acts as a mini exhaust system so to speak, when the oil heats up?? there has to be some minute level of combustion in the crankcase??? I may be off the mark here, I just don't want to break my engine! lol :)

If the engine is running too hot then smoke can come out the oil filler.
How hot is the dipstick when the engine has been running for a while? Can you touch it without burning yourself?
Just a thought :)

Aha did, I had it idling way too high? Poor little thing was reving its guts out, the mixture screw is really touchy as the carbi is too big for the motor apparently (previous owner was holden mechanic,,hmmph) I am constantly having to monitor it, I did get it running smoothly in the end, could feel it breathe a sigh of relief,, dipstick wasn't too hot to touch though...but i know the car was feeling a bit stressed (as was I)!lol

Well, I never have the pipe off with the engine going... so maybe there is a bit of smoke coming out of the pipe... or being sucked into the air cleaner all the time...... so We won't know about the smoke...
anyway, so long as You can hold the dipstick without it being too hot to hold...

Oh boy, now, not only will I have the dikky mix screw to obsess over.. now dipstick temp too.lol :D dang fangled high tech thing!

Thankyou all for pointing this out I will be able to sleep a little easier tonight....... until tomorrow's driving, now the funny generator noise has gone,, the revving sorted... wonder what noises will surface next!!!!;) This all started by getting the gearbox overhauled...lol

Well there is usually a pipe on top of the oil filler cannister - it goes to the aircleaner - this is to draw fumes into the carb, and sometimes there is a pipe from the bottom of the oil filler cannister that goes through the tinware towards the ground - it should have a rubber drain valve (reed valve) on the very bottom to allow water (moisture) to exit the crankcase, but not allow anything to be sucked back into the pipe.

Hmmmm,,, well the pipe to the aircleaner has been removed and the hole has been plugged with a very exotic plastic bottle cap, not too dissimilar to the covers they put on batteries in the shops... and yes there is a pipe passing through the tinware.. but nope..no valve..lol.

since the idle problem has been sorted (97%lol), the smoke seems to have stopped... Now,, after reading the other posts re: engines running badly..... next step,, big tune up on weekend,,whoopee!
