help with type iv-

OK, trying to stay calm, but getting nowhere.just put the1800 back into my other fatchick,(project for a carton) adjusted exhaust to 008', inlets to 006'??turned it over with ht lead disconnected, got oil pressure up,all turning nicely.reconnect lead, turn her over and hope for the best but all i get is gurgling and the odd backfire through the carbs. ive got nice spark at the leads and have timed the 009 statically at 7.5deg.the manuals i have give detailed instructions for putting the dizzy back in but it only seems to be able go in one way anyway!!can they go in the wrong way? the backfiring through the carbs should just be a timing thing shouldnt it?this motor does not sound at all like it wants to start the way i have it set up!i keep thinking ive got the leads on wrong or dizzy backwards but cant see how!!type iv 1800, the notch for no 1 on the dizzy rim points roughly to no 4 cylinder (front left)when timed, is this right??i have the stock pdsits on it at the momment,is it possible that its a carb prob?will they work without power to all the bits??i have some 40idfs that i havent had running yet but didnt put them on to keep away from more variables until i knew the motor was ok.lost, lost lost.

definatly sounds like a timing oops!
take cyl 1 to TDC and take the dissy cap off, make sure the rotor is pointing to No 1 on the cap, then go from there

Easiest way to check timing is set No 1 cyl to TDC (best to watch valves open/close to be sure). Lift dissy cap and check rotor is pointing to No 1 plug lead and points are open.
Does sound like timing problem, and yes, dissy should only go in one way.

Do you have a spare coil, condensor, rotor, dissy cap, points you can swap in to see if it helps?

sitting here about to put in new condenser, points, rotor.BUT if ive got a good strong blue spark when i put a lead nere earth, shouldnt that say my ignition system is working ok.after turning it ovr for a little while i did notice that the coil was preety warm so ill look at my manuals again and test that too,but again, ive got good spark!!!so it shouldnt be that.argggg.i really should have said NO to drugs!!!!my process of elimination is getting me nowhere.its all good fun i guess.try again tomorrow with new eyes.
